Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has many decisions to make over the next two weeks at the trade deadline. Still, he has made one thing clear: Saquon Barkley won't be part of those conversations.
NFL insiders Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport reported that the Eagles are telling teams that Barkley will not be traded. Garafolo and Rapoport shared more about what went into the decision.
"Saquon Barkley will not be traded before next week's trade deadline, sources told NFL Network, putting an end to speculation that the star running back could be on the move with the Philadelphia Eagles trending toward being out of contention.
Barkley, 29, has two years and just over $35 million remaining on his contract with the Eagles, who have had trade talks involving some of their players as general manager Howie Roseman surveys the market to see if he can acquire future draft-pick compensation."
"Still, Roseman and the Eagles believe they still have plenty of talent on the roster to compete in 2027 and beyond. That's why, according to sources, they've made it clear to teams they're not considering trading Barkley."
Saquon Barkley has proven his worth to the Eagles over his three-year career with them
Barkley was an instant star for the Eagles when he arrived in 2024. He rushed for a franchise-record 2,005 yards and 13 touchdowns, making the Pro Bowl, All-Pro, and was named the AP Offensive Player of the Year. Oh, and he helped the franchise win their second Super Bowl ever.
Last year was not as great for Barkley, rushing for just 1,140 yards and seven touchdowns in a struggling offense. He went from averaging 5.8 yards per carry in 2024 to 4.1 yards per carry in 2025.
This season has been mixed at best, with injuries affecting Barkley, as he has dealt with a stringer, hamstring, and back injuries. Despite that, he is averaging a staggering 5.7 yards per carry, rushing for 244 yards and one touchdown.
Even with the ups and downs of the last two seasons, Barkley is still producing numbers that most Eagles running backs have not done in their first three years with the team. He has been the home run hitter they have needed on offense and helped them despite the struggles with injuries, offensive line issues, and changes with the play-caller.
Eagles are 1000% making the right call with not trading Saquon Barkley away
The Eagles would have been fools to trade Barkley away. For one, they would not have gotten the compensation they would want for a player of his status. Plus, he is too valuable to let go of at this moment.
This franchise is about to undergo a likely major roster and coaching staff turnover. If the Eagles want to stay in the playoff conversation in 2027, they need Barkley more than ever.
This season is proving that Barkley is back and can do everything that made him great in 2024. If it weren't for the injuries, he might be in the top five in rushing for the team. The proof was in the Eagles' Week 7 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, where he rushed for 62 yards on seven carries, including a touchdown, and nearly averaged nine yards per carry.
2027 will be a very interesting year for the Eagles, as they could move on from Nick Sirianni and make other changes. The 2026 shows suggest Barkley needs to be part of those plans to help the team navigate potential offseason moves.

No matter how this season ends for the Eagles, Barkley's leadership and toughness has proven enough that he should be on this team beyond 2026. Philly is going to lean on Barkley to get the job done next year when he's 100% healthy and ready to go.
