Many Philadelphia Eagles fans were unsure whether wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks would live up to expectations after the team traded for him in the offseason. Still, Week 1 showed he is every bit the real deal.
Wicks might have had only two receptions in the 24-22 win over the Washington Commanders, but each play was super impactful. His 64-yard reception in the first half was the Eagles' highlight play of the game. He also caught a touchdown pass to cap off a solid debut with the Birds.
In all, Wicks finished with two receptions for 73 yards and one touchdown in the win. After that kind of performance, it certainly feels like the Eagles made the right call in taking a chance on Wicks.
Eagles made a great deal with the Green Bay Packers for Dontayvion Wicks
During the offseason, the Eagles made two interesting moves involving Wicks. They first traded a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick to the Packers to acquire him. Philly then gave him a one-year contract extension to keep him through 2027.
Originally, the move was made for a couple of reasons. One, he would replace A.J. Brown, who was traded about two months later, in the starting lineup. Second, Wicks knew the new offense that offensive coordinator Sean Mannion was implementing after the two spent the last two years together with the Packers.
It felt like the most logical move at the time, but a risk, to say the least. Wicks' numbers declined each of the last three years with the Packers as he fell down the depth chart. The concern was that he had never really been a starter, so could he handle the WR2 position?
Eagles' training camp showed that, yes, he was going to be okay. Wicks was arguably the best receiver in camp and built quick chemistry with quarterback Jalen Hurts.
Week 1 was simply a sample size of what the Eagles fan base can expect from Wicks. He's got great size and the ability to make big plays downfield, which is pretty similar to how Brown played over the last four years.
Looking back at that offseason trade between the Eagles and Packers, it's wild to think Philly came out of it as much of a winner. It's a credit to Howie Roseman and Mannion for working together to make sure that trade happened, knowing Wicks would be a great fit for the offense.

For Eagles fans, it's easy to get carried away by Wicks' performance and think he'll play that way for the rest of the season. It should be encouraging that the Eagles have a solid passing game because they took a chance on a young, talented receiver like Wicks.
