Usually, jersey numbers are not that big of a deal for fans, but the Philadelphia Eagles fan base had a lot to say about new cornerback Jaire Alexander's number.

The Eagles made a trade with the Baltimore Ravens to acquire Alexander for a Day 3 draft pick. While many Philly fans are wondering what kind of role he's going to play in the secondary, one mystery about Alexander has been answered.

Alexander will be donning the number 18 jersey for the Eagles. That number was previously worn by John Metchie III, who was dealt at the trade deadline to the New York Jets so the Eagles could get cornerback Michael Carter II. Alexander has worn the number 23 throughout his NFL career, but Jakorian Bennett currently has that number.

Eagles fans not loving the choice for number 18 with Alexander

There have been some good players who have worn number 18 with the Eagles, including former wide receiver Ben Hawkins, who led the NFL in receiving yards in 1967, and another former wide receiver, Jeremy Maclin, who was one of the Eagles' top receivers from 2009 through 2014.

Since Maclin, though, that number 18 has not had much luck. Six players have held the number, with the two most common nightmare ones being wide receivers Dorian Green-Beckham and Jalen Reagor. Currently, Eagles practice squad receiver Britain Covey has held the number the longest since Maclin, as he wore it from 2022 through 2024.

Alexander has a chance to create a new legacy with the number as he brings his two Pro Bowl appearances to the Eagles. There is some mystery as to whether Philly will have Alexander start at one of the outside corner positions or if he will back up Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean.

Eagles fans are rooting for Alexander to step up to the plate and find that star corner status again in Philly. Let's just hope the jersey number doesn't hold him back.
