If you're a little older like we are, you probably remember dad or granddad complain every time the Philadelphia Eagles season ended. He was probably mumbling something about Philly's 76ers and complaining about the Boston Celtics. Oh, how granddad hated the Celtics.
As we began growing into Philly sports fans, we heard stories about how the Sixers and Celtics were on opposite sides of this longstanding feud. There was just one issue. Granddad called this a rivalry, but honestly, we don't remember any great Sixers wins in the series.
Yeah, there was the Dr. J thing. That must have been nice, but truth be told, we're sick of having to watch those guys in Boston win all of the hardware>
And, it may get worse.
Make sure you're sitting down for this next announcement if you aren't already.
Eagles Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie is in the mix to buy the Boston Celtics.
Last night, we dreamt of a world where Jeffrey Lurie was the owner of the Boston Celtics and was damn good at it. We dreamt he made Boston into an ever greater organization than they already are.
We woke up screaming and found out it wasn't a dream.
Per Bill Simmons, he's a finalist to purchase the team.

“Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie is in the running to buy the Boston Celtics. He’s a Boston native w/ degrees from Clark, Brandeis AND B.U. His first big company was called Chestnut Hill Productions. Huge Celts fan obviously.”

Lurie grew up in Boston and was a Boston sports fan as a child, so we get it. He attended Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts and earned his masters degree from Boston University. He received a doctorate from Brandeis University in Waltham. Both Clark and Brandeis are both just outside of Boston.
Before paying $185 million to Norman Braman (the most ever to buy an NFL franchise at the time), he attempted to buy the New England Patriots from James Orthwein. He recently sold minority stakes in the Eagles back in November.
He dropped out during bidding. The Pats were eventually sold to Robert Kraft.
The Celtics have been owned since 2002 by Boston Basketball Partners and are valued at $6 billion.
Celtics Wire reports the Grousbeck family, the current majority owners, began fielding bids from several interested groups around the end of January. They reportedly hope to sell 51% of the club in the next few months before handing over another 49% of the controlling stake in 2028.
No one knows if Lurie or any other interested parties are interested in agreeing to those terms. Stay tuned.
