While the Eagles have not been one of the more active teams on the waiver wire this preseason, the team has made a couple of key trades in an effort to defend their 2024 Super Bowl title.

After the addition of wide receiver John Metchie III, the Eagles opted to release Giles Jackson and add some depth at linebacker. The Eagles announced they have signed Chance Campbell, who reunites with his former linebacker coach, as a starter, Nakobe Dean is currently dealing with a torn patellar tendon.

What the moves mean for the Eagles at wide receiver and linebacker

Campbell adds depth to the linebacker room, which is trying to stay healthy during the final part of the preseason. The Eagles currently have 12 wide receivers and will likely end up with six on the 53-man roster come cut day, with one or two possibly joining the practice squad after waiver claims.

Jackson, who was an undrafted free agent signed after the 2025 NFL Draft, appeared in both preseason games for Philadelphia. He caught two receptions for nine yards, in addition to making minimal contributions on special teams.

Campbell has dealt with injuries throughout his professional career since graduating from Ole Miss in 2022. He was placed on injured reserve in 2022, ending his rookie campaign, in 2023 he bounced back and forth between the active roster and practice squad before an injury ended his season after four games, followed by a torn ACL in 2024 during training camp that once again ended his season prematurely.

Campbell's current status and the reason for his signing could be based on his familiarity with King, his upside potential, and the need for Philadelphia to rest key contributors who've already locked up a roster spot. Campbell's appearance during the Eagles' final preseason game is not only for an audition with Philadelphia, but also for the rest of the NFL to prove the high upside linebacker is healthy enough to belong in the NFL.
