Eagles who were hammers in Week 15 (and a handful of Steelers who were nails)
What a night! We can't remember the last time we felt this level of joy. It wasn't that long ago. Maybe it was the win over the Baltimore Ravens? The Philadelphia Eagles weren't perfect, but they survived a couple of early turnovers to take a lead into halftime. They then blanked the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third and fourth quarters.
Pittsburgh only possessed the ball twice in the second half. They only ran 11 offensive plays. Take a second. Let that sink in for a few.
A 27-13 final score is how this one will be remembered. We'll also remember stellar performances, dominant offense, and smothering defense.
Hammer: Jalen Hurts
Jalen Hurts faced tremendous criticism leading up to this one. He responded with one of his best showings of the regular season.
He completed 25 of 32 pass attempts. He ran for 45 yards on 15 carries and accounted for three total TDS. Two were passing TDs to his dynamic duo.
Oh, and by the way, his left ring finger is broken.
Hammers: A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith
A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith were masterful. Both exceeded 100 yards receiving. Both caught a touchdown pass. DeVonta's 11 receptions double as a career high.
There's always room to grow, but we learned something vs. one of the NFL's top defenses. Jalen Hurts and the Eagles' passing game can improve, but in no way, is it broken.
Hammer: Kenneth Gainwell
Kenneth Gainwell filled in admirably as Saquon Barkley was, in his own words, "dealing with a little something". Philly's star tailback and MVP candidate sat out of most of the 2nd quarter.
Kenny G racked up 20 yards on seven carries, 40 yards on three receptions, and a pair of clutch conversions to move the sticks.
Hammers: Nolan Smith and the Eagles defense
Nolan Smith had himself a day. He notched four total tackles. Three were solo stops. He also stuck his head in on a sack, two additional QB hits, and two tackles for a loss of yardage.
Vic Fangio's defense was again masterful. They only surrendered three points on two Eagles turnovers and held the Steelers to 163 total yards and 20 minutes of possession time.
Hammer: Jake Elliott
We were rough on him when he struggled. We tip our caps when he plays well. Jake Elliott answered the call. His coaches showed they had confidence in him, and he delivered.
Jake made both of his field goal attempts and all three of his extra-point attempts en route to nine points. He's still 0-5 on kicks past 50 yards, but he nailed a 41-yarder in this one.
Nails: Russel Wilson and Najee Harris
Russell Wilson entered this one with a 6-1 record as the Steelers' starting QB and a 6-0 record vs. Philly. If the Birds were to break their jinx versus him, this was the game to do so.
He was humbled. So was Steelers tailback Najee Harris. The latter caught one pass for seven yards and notched 14 yards on six carries. His fumble spearheaded an Eagles TD drive that put the Birds up by 14 points and gave the momentum to Philly, momentum the Steelers would never regain.
Nails: The Steelers defense
The Steelers' defense couldn't get off the field as the Eagles' offense did pretty much whatever it wanted to. Pittsburgh's offense couldn't gain any consistent traction because the Eagles' defense wouldn't allow it.
The best part of this game for us was seeing the Eagles' final drive devour every second off of the clock. It began with over ten minutes. It ended with Jalen Hurts kneeling in the red zone after a 21-play drive sealed the deal.
Now, that's a statement!
