Former NFL GM and NFL analyst Mike Mayock delivered some praise, hope, and a reset of expectations to Eagles fans with his recent appearance on 94WIP in reference to quarterback Jalen Hurts in 2025.
"I look at his body of work since he's got in the league. What happens each day, each week, each year, and the way I look at him has not changed since August. That is that there are four franchise QBs in this league, two of them are currently hurt, and there is a group of QBs from 5-13 where you can win a Super Bowl with those guys. By the way, Jalen won one, as did Matthew Stafford, who is another one I have in the group of 5-13. They're really good players, they're just not franchise guys that can throw you on their back and take you to a Super Bowl."
How Hurts has done during a wild start to Eagles' 2025 season
While Mayock didn't slander Hurts by any means, he did voice his opinion on Hurts not being in the NFL's "elite" tier of quarterbacks, which, by all accounts, is ok. Mayock explained that Hurts being in the next tier of quarterbacks is perfectly fine, as it can result in a Super Bowl victory, likening Hurts to Matthew Stafford.
While Mayock's comments may "hurt" some Eagles fans, the reality is that Hurts' even-keeled mentality is what's needed in Philadelphia right now, especially given the erratic offensive output. While Hurts hasn't been one of the NFL's most dynamic quarterbacks, he's been able to effectively manage the offense that occasionally allows him to push the ball down the field.
Hurts has seen an uptick in passing yards over the past three weeks, throwing for over 280 yards consecutively with a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 6-1. Unfortunately, based on the evidence, the Eagles seem to be shying away from that, as they've lost two of those games.
