Oh, Simmons, that wasn't a good thing to say. The Titans' defensive tackle wants his team to contain Hurts and keep him from running all over the place. Hurts ran for 46 yards on seven carries in the 24-22 Week 1 win over the Washington Commanders.
If Simmons really wants his Tennessee defense to do that, the Eagles would more than welcome it. That strategy went so well for them the last time it happened.
A quick reminder of Jalen Hurts dominating the Titans in the Eagles' last meeting with them
Let's travel back to December 4, 2022, when the Titans faced the Eagles in Philly. Philly was rolling with a 10-1 record, while Tennessee was doing well at 7-4.
The big storyline was A.J. Brown facing off against his old team, the Titans, after the Eagles traded for him in the 2022 NFL Draft. Everyone can guess how the rest went, but Hurts was the star of the game.
On the opening drive, Hurts threw a long 34-yard pass to DeVonta Smith to start the scoring. Two drives later, horrendous coverage on Brown left him wide open for a 40-yard touchdown pass. In the third quarter, Hurts found Brown again on a 29-yard touchdown to really seal their 35-10 blowout win over the Titans.
Hurts finished the game with 29-of-39 passes for 380 yards and three touchdowns, with zero interceptions. Oh, and yes, Simmons, Hurts did have "non-QB" moments too: he ran for 12 yards on five carries and scored on a short two-yard touchdown run.
Brown led the team with eight receptions for 119 yards and two scores. Hurts did a great job spreading the ball around, though, as Smith had five receptions for 102 yards and a touchdown. Nine different Eagles players had at least one reception in the victory.
Jeffery Simmons should be careful what he wishes for with Jalen Hurts and the Eagles
Simmons must not have been able to watch game tape of Hurts and the Eagles beating the Commanders last week yet, but here are some notes he can take. Hurts completed 15-of-24 for 203 yards and three touchdowns, including completing three passes of 30 yards or more to three different receivers.
Pro Football Focus shared how good of a quarterback Hurts was in Week 1. He got an overall grade of 79.7 and was ranked eighth out of 32 NFL quarterbacks. His passing grade? 75.6, ranking 10th among quarterbacks. They also added that Hurts made the most big-time throws without a turnover-worthy play in Week 1: three.
To Simmons' credit, he is somewhat right about Hurts; the Titans need to contain him. Hurts showed last week that he is willing to run the football and even looked faster in the process.

The last thing Simmons wants to do, though, is give Hurts bulletin-board material going into the game. He just delivered it, and Hurts will prove why he made a mistake with that comment.
