At this point, everyone knows that Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Quinyon Mitchell is one of the top five shutdown corners in the NFL.
Mitchell has been great over the last two years and continues to impress everyone. ESPN NFL analyst Mina Kimes dove into some of Mitchell's insane stats, but also acknowledged an area he needs to improve.
"Quinyon Mitchell is so freaking good at football. -0.16 EPA per target, which was second, despite having zero interceptions. That's so insane. The fact that he finished that high despite not getting his hands, or he got his hands on the football, he had a lot of passes defensed, he just didn't come down with it, which is the one area, you know, you wanna see from him. He also, this is one of my favorite stats of his, he allowed 1.8 yards after catch per reception, which was first. Amongst every cornerback in football. He had a 42% tight window rate, which is first. Again, the NFL average is 25%. The dude is like glue. I mean, he is so, so complete as a corner. He just needs to get some interceptions."
Quinyon Mitchell has to get more interceptions for the Eagles
Last season, Mitchell put up 45 tackles, 17 pass deflections, and one fumble recovery in 16 games. He also allowed a completion percentage of 44.3% and a passer rating of 64.3 en route to a Pro Bowl and All-Pro selection for the first time in his career.
The ironic part about Mitchell is that even though he has not had an interception in his regular season career, he has gone off in the playoffs with picks. He had two interceptions during their Super Bowl run in 2024, with picks against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Wild Card Game and the Washington Commanders in the NFC Conference Title Game. Last year, he picked off the San Francisco 49ers twice in the NFC Wild Card loss.
Mitchell has the ability to create turnovers when it counts the most, but he is more of a shutdown corner. He will press up on receivers and make their lives tough with his coverage to the point that no one can get a catch on him. Last season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was a perfect example of that, as he recorded five pass deflections.

There are not many cornerbacks like Mitchell in the NFL, as he stands among the best. The crazy part is that he is only going into his third year in the league, so he is only going to get better. Grabbing some more interceptions in the regular season, though, would be nice to have from Mitchell.
