NFL analyst was all facts and no fiction on why top OC candidates turned down Eagles

It makes sense I guess.

Philadelphia Eagles fans are still left confused and somewhat angry about losing out on their top two candidates for the team's offensive coordinator opening within days of each other.

Mike McDaniel will either be a head coach or take the Los Angeles Chargers' offensive coordinator job. As for Brian Daboll, he will either take the Buffalo Bills head coach job or land as the Tennessee Titans' offensive coordinator.

With McDaniel and Daboll both out, everyone is wondering why they would turn the Eagles down for their offensive coordinator job. ESPN NFL analyst Ben Solak appeared on SportsRadio 94 WIP to answer that question as he understood McDaniel's stance, but not as much for Daboll.

“McDaniel’s offense is built on quick releases and attacking the middle of the field. Jalen Hurts tends to hold the ball longer and doesn’t work the middle as much, so the scheme would’ve needed major changes. With Daboll, though, I think all the tools were already there.”

Eagles lost Mike McDaniel and Brian Daboll for OC opening

The McDaniel argument makes sense from Solak, as Hurts has not been big on throwing the ball in the middle of the field. A lot of that is because he has struggled in that part of the field, with many of his turnovers coming from there.

Everyone feels the same about Daboll, as everything was perfect for him. He knows Saquon Barkley from their time together with the New York Giants, and Daboll worked with Hurts at Alabama, so there seemed to be no excuses for that.

Many wonder whether the high turnover at offensive coordinator could play a role, as the Eagles will have their fifth in six years. The treatment of Kevin Patullo last could also be a factor, as he got his house egged during the middle of the season, so coaches might not want to deal with that.

There is considerable drama and reports that come from working in Philadelphia, which the offensive coordinator would have to deal with. From A.J. Brown's antics to Jalen Hurts reportedly not always being willing to run the ball, there would be challenges within the team to manage weekly.

The candidate pool is getting smaller, but there are still good choices for the Eagles, with Kliff Kingsbury now the next big name fans are keeping an eye on. Regardless, this is going to be a bumpy process for the Eagles, a lot bumpier than fans expected.
