There are some Philadelphia Eagles fans who are sweating a bit entering the final days before the trade deadline to see what the team is going to do.
So far this past week, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman struck a deal with the New York Jets to get cornerback Michael Carter II, which filled one roster void on the team. The Athletic's Dianna Russini reports that Roseman isn't done yet, as there were additional conversations with the Jets beyond Carter.
"The Eagles need an edge rusher and asked the Jets about Jermaine Johnson. It makes sense, considering former Jets GM Joe Douglas drafted him in New York and is now Philly’s senior personnel director. However, New York has held a high asking price of a second-round pick or better."
Russini also added another team to keep in mind for the Eagles, making calls to them as well. Another AFC team could be the Cincinnati Bengals, which might have some players who have Philly's attention.
"Many teams, including the Rams, 49ers, Lions, Colts and Eagles, have called the Bengals on numerous players, including LB Logan Wilson, CB Cam Taylor-Britt and, of course, DE Trey Hendrickson. For now, some teams don’t believe Cincinnati has any real interest in moving its core pieces."
Which direction should the Eagles go at the trade deadline?
The number one position the Eagles have to take care of now is edge rusher. Brandon Graham has given some life to the position, but he's expected to be a part-time pass rusher. Even Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio subtly hinted he wants more help off the edge.
While Hendrickson would be a dream trade, there were also talks about Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett also being an option, with a reported three first-round picks being offered by the Eagles. The Browns have no interest in moving on from the one player who is holding the franchise from completely crumbling.
The only other option that makes a ton of sense is the Miami Dolphins, with edge rushers Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips being perfect fits for the Eagles. Chubb and Phillips played under Fangio in 2023, and with the Dolphins parting ways with general manager Chris Grier, a potential fire sale is expected, which the Eagles should consider.
