Nick Sirianni didn't help clear up Eagles' Jonathan Greenard mystery for Week 1

There was a lot of anticipation for the Philadelphia Eagles to hit the field for Week 1 against the Washington Commanders.

Despite being close to game day, the Eagles still have some big questions to answer. They still need to decide who will be the backup quarterback, which hasn't been revealed yet.

Another major mystery to solve is where edge rusher Jonathan Greenard will play in the Commanders' game after the pectoral injury that cost him all of training camp. The Eagles' new depth chart lists Greenard next to Nolan Smith Jr. and Jalyx Hunt, leaving his status up in the air.

What Eagles fans know about Jonathan Greenard's status for Commanders Week 1 game

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni spoke to the media for the first time when asked about Greenard's status for the game. Sirianni did not exactly help with the answer.

"Yeah, we'll see. I think that all our guys that have had some dings throughout training camp have worked their butts off. That's what I always admire about this group led by our captains and our, leaders is that this team works hard. And when you work hard, it's not just on the practice field. It's also in the film room. It's also, if you're having to rehab an injury. And he's worked his butt off. We'll see where that is by the end of the week."

Eagles fans did get some good news about Greenard, as he was suited up for practice. Nj.com's Cayden Steele shared a video of Greenard in pads warming up with the team.

Philly traded for Greenard during the 2026 NFL Draft, giving up two third-round picks for him. The Eagles then gave him a four-year, $100 million contract extension shortly afterward.

Greenard is coming off a very quiet three-sack season for the Minnesota Vikings last year. Before that, he recorded 24.5 sacks in 2023 and 2024 combined, earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2024.

If Greenard can't go, it will be Hunt and Smith in the starting lineup. Smith only had three sacks last year for the Eagles and missed time due to his triceps injury. Hunt had a career year, becoming the first player in franchise history to lead the Eagles in sacks (6.5) and interceptions (three) in the same year.

Eagles fans would love to see Greenard on the field, but if he needs another week, they could manage with Smith and Hunt. The uncertainty, though, frustrates the fan base, who don't know what will happen with their new addition in the upcoming game.
