After the 2025 season ended, it was clear the Philadelphia Eagles needed to do something about their offense. The group was still loaded with talented players, but the unit wasn’t producing like it. That forced Philadelphia to make a change at offensive coordinator, moving on from Kevin Patullo and hiring Sean Mannion, and revamping the offensive coaching staff.
Mannion won’t just be the man calling plays for the Eagles, he’ll be bringing an entire new system. Head coach Nick Sirianni talked about that system on Tuesday, and how excited he is to see quarterback Jalen Hurts in the system. The head coach explained that there will be an emphasis on the run and play-action, saying that Hurts has been really good in that world. With the new scheme leaning on those things, Sirianni is confident his quarterback and offense can go to another level.
"Excited about just the mesh between the run, play-action, the different things I think Jalen has been really good at. In the play-action world, when we’ve been able to do it, when we have done it, he’s been really good at some of those. And so he’s been really good when we have a good run game. He’s been really good when we had a good run game tied with his play-action. And I think this is an opportunity for us to take another step within that, in addition to some of the good things that we’ve done through offense."Nick Sirianni (The Athletic)
Eagles offense under Sean Mannion is expected to take Jalen Hurts to another level
Aside from talking about running the ball and the play-action game, Sirianni didn’t want to give too many details about Philly’s offense, but Mannion’s history leads everyone to believe that it’ll be some iteration of a Shanahan offense that is used by teams like the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams, and several other productive offenses. Those offenses lean heavily on the run and play action, so that would be in line with what Sirianni shared.
Mannion, in his two-year coaching career, spent time as an offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach for the Green Bay Packers under Matt LaFleur. LaFleur also runs an offense from the Shanahan tree, so that’s an idea of what Eagles fans should expect.

If Philadelphia can hit the ground running with the new scheme, Hurts should be able to ascend to a new level like Sirianni is predicting. The veteran quarterback has already shown that he can be elite, playing dominant football throughout his five years as a full-time starter. It’ll be exciting to see if Sean Mannion can help unlock another level.
