Believe it or not, there was a time when Doug Pederson was seen as one of the best coaches in the NFL. Coming off a Super Bowl victory and three consecutive playoff appearances, it looked like he would be leading the Philadelphia Eagles for a decade or more. Instead, one disastrous season was enough for him to lose his job.
Fast forward six years or so, and Eagles fans are watching a strikingly similar story play itself out with Nick Sirianni. He has been historically successful since taking over for Pederson, reaching two Super Bowls and winning one.
But if the Eagles' willingness to move on from Pederson so quickly is any indication, Sirianni might not be around for much longer if this season continues to go south.
Nick Sirianni is one disappointing season away from meeting Doug Pederson's Eagles fate
As rocky as the 2025 season was for the Eagles, Sirianni did manage to lead his team to a division title. Unfortunately for him, that result still falls short of Philadelphia's standards. Consider the Wild Card exit strike one.
In 2026, Sirianni might manage to earn strikes two and three with one swing of the bat. This Eagles season has been nothing short of a disaster. Philly is 2-3, but after losing two starting offensive linemen and failing to find an identity on offense, the season outlook is anything but encouraging.
If the season continues to go downhill, it may be Sirianni's last in Philadelphia. A 4-win campaign was enough to push Pederson out. Failing to make the playoffs could lead Sirianni to a similar fate.
ESPN's Bill Barnwell pointed out the similarity between the two tenures in a recent article discussing coaches and players on the hot seat. Barnwell said, "If the losing streak continues, well, the sudden end to Doug Pederson's tenure with the team in 2020 should tell you just how quickly an otherwise successful run can come to a sudden close in Philadelphia."
Eagles can still save Nick Sirianni's job
The Eagles seem to be on the verge of a complete rebuild. Howie Roseman has added draft picks to his arsenal and could decide to move on from Jalen Hurts after this year. It may just make sense to start over with a new quarterback and a new head coach in 2027.
It's far too early to count Sirianni out, though. The Eagles are just five games into the season and could still turn things around.
As frustrating as the start to the year has been, the Eagles could still win the NFC East without having to make up too much ground. The New York Giants currently lead the division at 3-1-1, and they're without their starting quarterback. In the current state of the division, nine wins may be enough to win it.

Only time will tell what Sirianni needs to accomplish this season to keep his job, but a playoff appearance would make it difficult for the Eagles to move on so quickly.
