Nick Sirianni says the quiet part out quietly about Kyle McCord's readiness

Is McCord truly ready?

The Philadelphia Eagles got the job done against the New York Jets 19-17 to close out the preseason, but there might be bigger questions for a position than Philly fans might have thought.

After the game, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni met with the media as he answered his usual questions about the game. He was asked about backup quarterback Tanner McKee's finger injury and whether he would be available in Week 1.

"We'll see," Sirianni said via Bleeding Green Nation's Brandon Lee Gowton. "You guys know he's dealing with a finger injury. He's working to get back. And we'll see where he is."

That was followed up by a question being asked about rookie Kyle McCord's readiness to fill in as QB2 if McKee isn't ready to go. Sirianni didn't exactly give a straight answer to the question.

"Yeah, uh, I think - again, like I said, Kyle has done some good things. And I thought he did some good things, played smart situational football today. Yeah, I mean, we'll uh - I feel good about this roster as a whole and where we are right now. And, yeah, at all positions."

Do the Eagles have a big problem on their hands at quarterback?

Last year, the Eagles were fortunate to have Kenny Pickett as the second-string quarterback and McKee filling in as the third-string quarterback. This season, it doesn't seem to be the same case.

McCord and Dorian Thompson-Robinson have been battling it out for the QB3 job. During the Jets game, it was all McCord taking the snaps at quarterback as DTR did not appear in the contest at all. McCord finished 15 of 35 for 136 yards and an interception with three yards on the ground.

Some might either be interpreting this as McCord won the third string job and the Eagles wanted him to take all the reps or the Eagles were going with DTR as the third string, but still wanted McCord ready for when he goes to the practice squad. It feels as though it might be McCord making the roster from the questions being asked by the media, but who knows at this point.

The problem here is that McCord and Thompson-Robinson didn't really do much to give the Eagles confidence that either one could step in and play if Hurts and McKee are hurt. This is something that might not end up being a problem in the end, but Hurts has a tendency to miss one or two games in the regular season, so it could become an issue.

Sirianni didn't exactly give McCord a glowing review, so now this McKee finger injury has become a thing. If he's not ready to go against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1 of the regular season, the question becomes can McCord step in for McKee if needed? Right now, that feels like a shaky question.
