Nick Sirianni suddenly has to fix the one problem no Eagles fan saw coming

The Philadelphia Eagles' famous Tush Push play is suddenly trending down at an alarming rate.

To be clear, the Philadelphia Eagles are not a one-trick pony. They find new ways to win a game every week, with Week 11’s complete shutdown of the Detroit Lions, 16-9, just the latest example.

There’s no doubt, though, that Philly’s famous Tush Push play is a weapon that's been hiding in plain sight. NFL teams have been trying to copy — and stop — the play for three consecutive years, with little to no success.

That tide is clearly changing. Nick Sirianni’s offense has struggled to do anything well with much consistency over his team’s first 10 games of the 2025 season, and that suddenly includes his signature play.

The Eagles went a staggering one-for-six on Tush Push attempts against the Lions, continuing a troubling trend that could force Sirianni to change his approach late in games down the stretch.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ Tush Push conversion rate has plummeted to an all-time low

Sirianni rarely hesitates to go for it on fourth-and-short in a late-game situation, even when his Eagles are deep in their own territory.

But the tush-push with QB Jalen Hurts is no longer automatic. In fact, it’s trending closer to a coin flip in 2025.

According to the handy tracking service tushpush.fyi, the Eagles have attempted the play 24 times this season; they've converted either a first down or touchdown on 15 of those attempts, for a success rate of 62.5 percent. According to Eagles reporter Jeff Kerr, formerly of CBS Sports, their conversion rate has been dropping for a few years now, from 88.1 percent in 2023 to 82.4 percent in 2024.

Sunday night’s win over the Lions should have Sirianni’s attention. Detroit notably stuffed Hurts on back-to-back Tush Push attempts late in the ball game, including on fourth down from the Philadelphia 29-yard line. It was a 10-point game with 2:57 remaining in regulation at the time, and Sirianni was extremely fortunate that his defense was able to force a quick three-and-out and limit the Lions to a field goal.

It’s painfully obvious that the Eagles will have to adjust going forward. Sirianni has rarely called anything other than a Hurts QB sneak of that formation this year. More variation — like what the Baltimore Ravens pulled off against the Browns with tight end Mark Andrews in Week 11 — could be needed to keep defenses on their toes.

The tush push might be the only play in NFL history that almost always works, even if the opponent knows exactly what’s coming. Nothing lasts forever, though, and Sirianni has no choice but to change in Week 12 and beyond, especially with his offense continuing its tractor-pull ways.
