To our delight (and surprise), the Philadelphia Eagles have fielded a premier defense. On the backs of veterans, rookies, and journeymen, for the first time since 1991, Philly ended the season with the NFL's top-ranked defense. Strong play and a plus-10 turnover differential paved the way for another Eagles Super Bowl appearance.
While the future for defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and his squad is bright, there may be some changes to his unit this offseason. Recently, Pro Football Focus ranked the top ten defensive players who are set to hit free agency. Wouldn't you know it? 30% of the list consisted of Eagles.
The Eagles are in danger of having their defensive cupboard raided this offseason.
The Eagles have a good portion of their defense returning after this historic run. There are also key members of their roster who may be courted by other teams if unsigned when free agency begins.
Teams will climb over each other to get their chance at poaching some of Philly's stars. Below are some defensive free agents PFF added to their top-ten ranking.
Zach Baun
Zack Baun signed a one-year deal with the Eagles. This was his first full season as a linebacker as he made the switch from part-time edge-rusher.
In a Saquon Barkley-esque turnaround, he might have just become the best linebacker in the league. In four years with the New Orleans Saints, he never recorded more than 30 total tackles. In his first year with the Birds, he collected 151 during the regular and postseason, and he still has one more game to play.
Baun earned himself a 1st-Team All-Pro nomination, and as a 5th-year veteran, he likely has lots more left in the tank. The Eagles would be remiss if they ignored extending Baun. He could be destined for what could turn into a legendary career.
Josh Sweat
While never truly becoming elite, Josh Sweat has been a solid producer for the Eagles since he was drafted in 2022. He has been an above-average pass rusher, but his run defense leaves something to be desired. Still, for the right price, the Eagles would probably love to have him back.
If they decide against doing so, however, he won't be unemployed for long.
Milton Williams
Milton Williams has made the most of his time splitting snaps with monsters Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis, but unfortunately, the Eagles can't hold on to everyone. Like Sweat, Williams could be lured away for a larger pot elsewhere. If he stays, this is an already-stacked defensive line.
Worth mentioning: Eagles legend Brandon Graham is also in the final year of his contract. He previously declared that this season would likely be his last, but after missing half the season, he may be inspired to return.
The 36-year-old veteran won't demand an astronomical price tag. Howie Roseman has a busy offseason ahead of him, but fans will attentively watch to see how this plays out.
