Remember when Philadelphia Eagles running back Will Shipley was selected in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft and the promise he showed late in his rookie season?
The Eagles primarily used him as a returner, but his touchdown in the NFC Championship Game win over the Washington Commanders was just a taste of what could have been for Shipley. That has seemed to evaporate pretty quickly over the last year, which has boiled over into the offseason.
From Tank Bigsby's arrival to the move made in the offseason to bring in more competition, Shipley's position with the Eagles is not as secure in 2026 as some might think. Come the end of training camp, he might end up being a surprise release from the team if he doesn't get his act right.
Will Shipley is quickly losing his spot on the Eagles' roster in 2026
It all started when he got injured after the first game of the 2025 season, and the Eagles had to make a trade to bring in Bigsby. While it was a disaster at the beginning with Bigsby on special teams, he ended up finding his groove on offense as Saquon Barkley's backup and averaged 5.9 yards per carry in an Eagles uniform.
Shipley returned from injury, but has slipped to RB3 on the depth chart and was reduced to only a returner. Even as a kickoff returner, he struggled as he had a bad fumble on the first play of the Week 16 win over the Washington Commanders.
Now in the offseason, the Eagles added some potential competition at RB3 and kickoff returner as they signed Dameon Pierce to replace A.J. Dillon's spot. This is bad news for Shipley, as he now has to face a running back who nearly reached 1,000 rushing yards in his rookie season in 2022. Shipley only has 131 career rushing yards.

It might already be done for Shipley, but he has his work cut out for him as he tries to beat Pierce for the RB3 and kickoff returner job, but it doesn't look great for the once-potential future starting running back of the Eagles.
