When it comes to the success rate shown by Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman in nabbing impactful tight ends in the second round of the draft, the proverb "good things come in threes" might ring true this April.
Back in 2013, Zach Ertz got the call on draft day as the 35th pick, and Dallas Goedert also landed in Philadelphia via the second round as the 49th selection of the 2018 draft. With their respective NFL futures each up in the air amid free agency, the next second-round selection at tight end by Roseman could soon arrive from the Buckeye State.
Max Klare could be the next great Eagles second-round pick
The former Purdue Boilermaker and Ohio State Buckeye blends smooth route running with impressive athleticism and blocking prowess. Listed at 6-foot-5, 243 pounds, the Cincinnati native first made serious noise at Purdue, where Klare posted 51 catches for 685 yards and four trips to pay dirt in 2024.
After transferring to Ohio State, his numbers in Columbus took a slight dip (43 catches, 448 yards, two touchdowns), but with gamebreakers Carnell Tate and Jeremiah Smith out wide, there was never a pressing need for Klare to be an offensive focal point as a Buckeye.
Previously more renowned for his pass receiving skills, Pro Football Network's Ian Cummings examined the strides Klare made in the blocking phase this past season at Ohio State, which could play well in Philadelphia's fresh offensive approach under new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion:
"Where Klare has leveled up as of late, however, is as a blocker," Cummings said. "His game against Minnesota, in particular, accentuated his strengths there. Despite weighing in under 250 pounds, Klare weaponizes his explosiveness to generate vulnerable point-of-attack power, and his legs and hands are always exceedingly active, to maximize reloading and re-exertion. He has the leverage IQ to load his base and attune his pad level, and the angle IQ to attack blocks with judicious positioning, and he fights to the end of the whistle."
Roseman recently discussed the need to evolve in compiling his group of tight ends moving forward, and Klare checks off both boxes regarding blocking and receiving.

He's in that same draft range as Ertz and Goedert were when their names were called on draft weekend, so don't be surprised if Roseman reaches for the phone with Klare firmly in mind come round two this April.
