There are a lot of crazy things that can happen in the NFL Draft, and Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has been in the middle of a lot of the craziness.

Roseman has a knack for making trades that put his team on the map, as he has moved up in multiple drafts to acquire players like Jalen Carter and Jihaad Campbell. Philly has also made some trades, like trading away their first-round pick to acquire A.J. Brown, with all these moves working out in the Eagles' favor.

With so much uncertainty in the 2026 NFL Draft, there are many conversations about teams trading down, which could leave the door open for the Eagles to move up a few picks. There is one particular scenario in which, if it happens, Roseman would not be able to resist and would pick up the phone to get a deal done.

Eagles should trade up if Caleb Downs drops out of the top 10

There's been some chatter about Ohio State safety Caleb Downs potentially dropping out of the top 10 in the draft, with edge rushers being a focus early on. Downs is ranked as the second-best player on FanSided's Big Board entering the draft.

Last year with the Buckeyes, Downs made 68 tackles, two forced fumbles, two interceptions, one sack, and one pass deflection. He was named a first-team All-American, the third time in his college career.

It would be a stunner to see Downs drop out of the top 10, but in today's NFL, there is a high cost and need to find the next great edge rusher, so there will be a run of them early on. That will make things easier for the Eagles to move up and make a trade with a team like the Miami Dolphins at 11 to go get him.

For Roseman, it makes sense to move up, as the Eagles can trade away their first-round picks this year and next to acquire better talent. The potential A.J. Brown trade that could happen after June 1 leaves the door open that the Eagles will have another first-round pick from the New England Patriots, giving Roseman more ability to be creative with trades in this draft.

Philly has a massive need at safety with Reed Blankenship now on the Houston Texans. The Eagles are left with 2025 second-round pick Andrew Mukuba at one of the starting positions, and the other will most likely be between Marcus Epps and Michael Carter II.

Adding Downs to the Eagles' defense gives them a complete weapon that can load up in the box to stop the run and drop back into coverage with ease. This would be too good to be true if he is right there for the taking for Philly.
