5 Eagles that we fear are veering toward bust territory
For the sake of argument, we looked up the textbook definition of 'expectation'. Here's what our buddy Webster told us. We were given two explanations: 'a strong belief that something will happen or be the case in the future' and 'belief that someone will or should achieve something'. We had expectations for the 2023 Philadelphia Eagles. sadly, they let us down.
If you noticed, that's why we haven't enjoyed football as much as of late. We're back on the horse though. We have turned the page. It's time to build a roster. Attention shifts to those building blocks.
Philly houses a decent mix of veteran leadership (if all of these guys don't retire) and youthful energy. Every draft class brings excitement (and worry). It does so for several reasons.
If Philly is going to find their way back to football's biggest game, they need the youngsters to step up and take steps forward. We won't lie though. We can't say we aren't nervous.
Nolan Smith, EDGE/ outside linebacker
We don't say this a lot, but if you asked anyone with an opinion that you respect, they'd agree. First-round draft choices are expected to step in and contribute immediately.
Mid-round guys are gambles. We hope they work out, but we aren't surprised if they don't. Anything you get out of the third-day draftees and undrafted guys are bonuses.
Nolan Smith underperformed based on expectations. Now, we can blame that on a lack of opportunity and all kinds of other things, but here's where we can all agree. Philly invested too much into him. This has to work out. It would be nice if some of the other young Birds catch fire as well.
