7 winners (and 3 losers) for Eagles in Week 1 win over Packers
Well, that was intense! The Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers made their way to Brazil. These proud franchises both walked into Arena Corinthians with the same goal... Walk out with a 1-0 record.
In the end, the Birds would accomplish that. This one was tough and hard-fought though. The Birds certainly didn't make things easy on themselves, but a win is a win. You also know what they say.
If you're going to make adjustments, it feels better to do so after having secured a win. A long flight home will be a happy one. We have much to break down before the next game in ten days. We begin with the obligatory winners and losers.
Saquon Barkley (Stud)
Saquon Barkley racked up 109 yards rushing, 23 yards receiving, and three total TDs. Three end zone trips tie Terrell Owens (2004) for the most by an Eagle in his debut.
Seriously... What else needs to be said?
AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith (Studs)
We might be biased, but we believe this to be the best wide-receiver duo in the NFL. No disrespect is intended to the guys in Miami, but we continue to run out of superlatives here.
AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith combined for 12 catches. That resulted in 203 yards receiving, and a TD by AJ. Sure, we all acknowledge the rest of the corps needs to step up, but we won't worry about this now. It's truly an honor to watch these two work.
Nakobe Dean (Stud)
Nakobe Dean's contribution can't completely be limited to a discussion about the dent he made on the stat sheet. He got caught peeking into the backfield once, and that led to a big play by the Packers offense. More often than not, however, we saw competent play at the linebacker position.
Dean was impressive and is, without question, the Eagles' best linebacker. Had he not slipped on a potential pick-six, we'd certainly be grading his game even higher.
All in all, we'll give him an A-minus that's trending towards an A grade. He notched a pass breakup and four tackles. Three were solo, and one resulted in a loss of yardage.
It wasn't a perfect showing, but we all feel better about Nakobe than we did six knths ago.
Zack Baun (Stud)
There was the unnecessary roughness penalty that helped the Packers eventually put the ball in the end zone, but overall, we'd have to give Zack Baun a passing grade. He looked good. He started strong. He finished strong.
He finished his night with a team-leading 15 tackles. 11 of them were of the solo variety. He also notched two sacks and two QB hits. His second sack ended the game.
Reed Blankenship (Stud)
Reed continues to impress. The last time the Eagles played Green Bay, he baceme the first former undrafted rookie to pick off Aaron Rodgers. This time around, he picked off Jordan Love, and that pick was huge because it halted a Packers drive and helped shift some momentum.
Quinyon Mitchell (Stud)
How about a hand for the rookie? He wasn't shaken by the moment. His five total tackles tied for the third most by an Eagles defender this evening. His four solo stops tied him for second most in that category.
He was equally as impressive in coverage. He had two pass breakups in this one. It appears all that sparring with AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith in practice is paying off. We can't wait to see what he does next week in the true home opener.
Nolan Smith (Dud)
We aren't quite ready to throw Nolan Smith on the scrap heap like some of you, but we won't lie. We're starting to get worried here. No sacks... No TFLs... He got pushed around more often than not. He's a supreme athlete, but we have to see more.
Bryce Huff (Dud)
Bryce Huff didn't look great. That's about as honest as we can be. One tackle... That's the extent of what he has done on the stat sheet.
Philly gave him a three-year deal worth $51.1 million. When that happens, much is expected. He'll be fine, but he couldn't have gotten off to any slower of a start.
Avonte Maddox (Dud)
Avonte Maddox doesn't look good. Again, we can't be more honest than that. He's Philly's most experienced corner, but he was grabby much too often.
He was beaten on a TD toss. He also had a bad pass-interference call in the end zone. If this continues, you will see Cooper DeJean in the slot much sooner than expected.
Worth mentioning: We're torn. Do we put Jalen Hurts on the 'Dud' list?
Jalen Hurts made some phenomenal plays, but he also made some near-catastrophic mistakes. He fumbled twice. He lost one of them, and he threw two interceptions.
That simply cannot happen. The mistakes didn't cost Philly tonight, but best believe three turnovers is a recipe for disaster.
