A sad but familiar storyline takes its place on the front page of your Philadelphia Eagles news bulletins. Starting slot cornerback Avonte Maddox is again injured. It appears to be significant, and a trip to the injured reserve is almost certain. He may even miss the remainder of the season.

Philly sports mainstay Derrick Gunn expressed fears of what might be looming early on Friday. We then saw NBC Sports Philadelphia's John Clark inform us of the pec injury, one that has since been confirmed by the likes of Adam Schefter and others.

The Eagles lose a valuable piece of their secondary.

One can only wonder what Sean Desai is thinking right now. He entered Week 2's game versus the Minnesota Vikings minus starters Reed Blankenship and James Bradberry. Now, he loses Maddox. Zech McPhearson was lost for the campaign during the preseason.

Philly's cornerback room now consists of Bradberry (he will return from concussion protocol at some point) along with Darius Slay, Mario Goodrich, Josh Jobe, Eli Ricks, and Kelee Ringo. Mekhi Garner is on the practice squad. Isaiah Rodgers is on the reserve/suspended by commissioner list.

They say availability is a skill, and while no one would deny that Maddox is as talented as they come when he is on the field. The sad part is his career has often given us a familiar talking point.

It's not a matter of 'if' he'll be injured. It's more so a matter of 'when' he will be injured. We're hopeful for a speedy and full recovery, but it's time to shuffle the depth chart in Philly. We may even begin asking questions about how wise it would be to explore other options to replace Maddox next season.

On November 20th of 2021, he signed a three-year, $22.5 million contract extension. That makes him a free agent in 2025, but he represents $7.7 million in dead cap space next season.
