Dak Prescott's mammoth extension is the Eagles' best-case scenario

If you're thinking what we're thinking, you were kind of hoping this Prescott extension would happen.

Who would have thought? Dak Prescott is the highest paid player in NFL history. It just doesn't sound right, does it? There's no ring to it. The statement defies logic, unless of course you're a Philadelphia Eagles fan. We already know the deal having watched this nonsense for decades.

The Dallas Cowboys and their players are graded on curves. That's always been the case. If Dak had enjoyed the same career but he did it in Carolina, no one would really care as much.

But, he did it in Dallas. That means we discuss him like he's the second coming of Joe Montana despite the fact he's never reached an NFC Championship Game.

We're teasing by saying most of that (sort of). There's another component to Dak's recent extension. Dallas had backed themselves into a negotiating corner. They had, thus, given Dak all of the leverage.

Though we give Dak a hard time, he has proven to be one of the better quarterbacks in the game. Dallas certainly hasn't had anyone better for a while.

Prescott was going to get paid somewhere. He really didn't need a massive payday from the Cowboys. That meant Dallas had to pay him.

But, if you're the Eagles (or a Birds fan), this might be some of the best news you'll hear all week.

Dak Prescott's continued stay guarantees the Cowboys will continue to underachieve, and that's good news for the Eagles organization.

We know what you're thinking. 'Dak has crafted a 9-4 record versus the Eagles in 13 career games. How in the heck is his signing a good thing?

We're glad you asked. We base this theory on two things. The first is this. Despite his success versus the Birds, Dak's inability to rise to the occasion in big moments gives us confidence that the trend will continue.

Long term, it's better that Dallas refuses to evolve. If they're satisfied with postseason collapses, who are we to talk them out of it? Let Dallas... well... be Dallas.

Dak has some ability. Sometimes, we're more critical of him because he is a Cowboy, but let's take our emotions out of the argument for a second.

No one believes in him come playoff time. Heck, he doesn't believe in himself. We mentioned we were excited about two aspects of this extension though.

The second theory involves Dak's aforementioned dominance of the Birds. That win-loss total leaves a few things out of the argument. Conversations that never seem to surface while discussing the record.

Dak beat up on some bad Eagles teams and an inexperienced Jalen Hurts. On two occasions (2017 and 2021), he won versus a Philly team resting its starters in regular-season finales ahead of playoff runs.

Sure, Philly hasn't beaten Dallas in Arlington since 2017. This is the year though. Dak hasn't seen an Eagles team since then that is as good as the one he'll see this season.

So, go ahead Dallas. Pay Dak. Heck, while you're at it, go ahead and extend Mike McCarthy. Give Ezekiel Elliott a new deal. Do whatever you need to keep this Cowboys team together. We'd certainly appreciate that. You have no idea how much we love this.
