Eagles may have guaranteed themselves a deep playoff push thanks to home-run signing
You should have learned two things if you haven't learned anything else by watching the Philadelphia Eagles navigate free agency's terrain this week. First, no member of any NFL team's leadership structure should ever engage in direct conversations with a player unless said player is representing himself. That can land the organization in some warm water. Second, nothing is official until the pen touches the paper, but even though we know the latter theory to be true, we're going to party like rock stars anyway.
We heard all week that Howie Roseman wasn't done, that he was sniffing around even after adding Saquon Barkley and Bryce Huff in an attempt to land a top-tier linebacker. Per multiple sources, that turned out to be solid reporting.
Philly made another splash. This one should keep that smile on your face. Multiple sources, one being ESPN's senior NFL insider Adam Schefter, have reported the Birds have added Devin White to the nest. Don't take our word for it. Take a look for yourselves.
Okay, we like Schefty, but he misses the bullseye sometimes. Let's see what NFL Network's Ian Rapoport is saying. Uh oh! Look boys and girls! He's saying the same thing!
Wait! Are we in the twilight zone? Howie is dishing out cash for running backs AND linebackers now?
The Eagles addition of Devin White all but ensures a deep postseason run is ahead of us... hopefully.
It wasn't the greatest start to 2024. Philly was busy capping a monumental collapse, one of the worst in franchise history with an embarrassing loss at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That all but wiped away the feelings that this team would contend for Super Bowls for years to come.
Enter the big homie Howie Roseman. He told us the Eagles would be aggressive during the free-agency frenzy. He kept his promise. He addressed seemingly every major need this team had in the span of a few days.
Philly needed an edge rusher. He signed Bryce Huff. Discussions about the need for reinforcements at running back fueled the acquisition of Saquon Barkley.
The Birds needed a third wideout. DeVante Parker was acquired. Depth along the offensive line and at linebacker were needed. Boom! Howie added Matt Hennessy and Zack Baun, but the Devin White addition was the icing on the cake.
Now, there are some red flags. White, a former top-five selection (2019) was benched during Tampa Bay's playoff run last season, and he saw a drop-off in tackles and pressures while biting on play-action far too often.
Some may have proceeded with caution. Maybe that's why he was available for so long. It's hard to deny that he elevates the second level of Philly's defense simply by showing up at the Novacare Complex.
On paper, the Eagles are a better team than they were about a month ago, and while we realize games aren't won on paper, Howie Roseman has done his job well.
Though it's too early to make proclamations, we'll make one anyway. This team is too talented not to make a deep playoff run.
The NFL Draft nears. That will give the Eagles more opportunities to add weapons, but here's where we stand. Here's where we'll end this.
If this Eagles team doesn't raise another Vince Lombardi Trophy, don't blame Howie Roseman. We can't think of a single rock he hasn't turned over in an attempt to make this team better.
