Eagles linebacker named most 'overrated' player at his position
Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Devin White is a Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl champion. But, is he actually overrated at this point in his career? According to Bleacher Report he is, as the publication recently included him in a list of the most overrated players at every position.
After spending the first five seasons of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, White inked a one-year, $7.5 million deal with the Eagles in March. White started in 75 of the 76 games he appeared in as a member of the Bucs, and he's expected to snag a starting spot in Philadelphia's defense under new coordinator Vic Fangio.
Here's some of what B/R had to say about White:
"White, who has missed plenty of key tackles and gives up big plays as often as he makes them, was even benched for the first time in his career at the tail end of last season. According to Tampa Bay Times insider Rick Stroud, White reportedly rubbed coaches and teammates the wrong way with his attitude.
". . . White will likely get plenty of chances to prove himself on an Eagles team that fielded one of the league's worst linebacking corps last year. Relying on him to play a key role could come back to burn the Eagles, though."
White eager to prove himself in Philly
After a relatively underwhelming season in Tampa Bay in 2023, White is eager for an opportunity to prove himself as a member of the Eagles.
“It’s an opportunity to show why I was drafted Top 5, why I helped a team win the Super Bowl,” White said at his introductory presser in Philadelphia. “Just to prove that I do what I do. I don’t lack any confidence as far as being on a one-year deal. I don’t shy away from it. I think it was the best thing that happened.
"Last year wasn’t who you were, that’s never been Devin White on tape," he added. "Now you get an opportunity on a bigger stage, it’s a bigger platform here, it’s a better all-around team built right here, right now to do great things. And I want to be a part of that.”
White played 97 percent of all available defensive snaps for Tampa Bay last season, and he is projected to shoulder a large role for the Eagles in 2024. So, he should have an excellent opportunity to show that he's not overrated and in turn prove Bleacher Report -- and any other doubters -- wrong.
