Eagles offensive line will again enjoy a phenomenal season, but one area must be fixed
The Philadelphia Eagles' offensive line is the best in the business. There's no doubt about that. They're led by Jeff Stoutland. He's the best offensive line coach in the NFL There's no doubt about that either. Once upon a time, the 2021 offseason to be exact, the Birds said goodbye to a franchise legend and future Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Jason Peters, and then they got BETTER up front.
Former first-round selection Andre Dillard didn't work out. He now plays for the Tennessee Titans, but there's no reason to hang any heads. This unit is as loaded as they come.
Philly struck gold with Jordan Mailata, a 2018 seventh-rounder. They drafted Landon Dickerson in 2021. He earned his first Pro Bowl nod last season. Something tells us he'll follow with more.
Cam Jurgens and Tyler Steen were added during NFL Drafts in 2022 and 2023 respectively, and even though they lost a long-time starter who they, no doubt will miss, Isaac Seumalo, there's a possibility that the coming version of the Eagles O-line will be one of the best iterations that we have ever seen.. There's only one chink in the armor, and we'd love to see it remedied this season.
There's no stopping the Eagles' offensive line, especially if they remedy their issue of being the NFL's most penalized front.
The Eagles tied for the most penalties committed by an offensive line in 2022. 44 times, one of the members of their unit was flagged. Yes, that's a little over 2.5 infractions per game. As good as they are, that's one area where they'd like to get better because as dominant as we have seen them be, it's the self-inflicted wounds that sting most.
Think back to Super Bowl LVII. The Jalen Hurts fumble came one play after a false start call by Isaac Seumalo in a short-yardage situation. Sure, there were other mistakes that led to last February's loss. We also don't want to diminish Isaac's brilliance. Still, as much as we state that Jalen would love to have one opportunity back, that fumble probably doesn't occur if the play that precedes ends with a first down by way of a quarterback sneak.
Pro Football Focus ranked the NFL's top offensive lines recently. Is there any doubt about who topped the list? They too mentioned the flags but named Lane Johnson as the best player on the line while giving some well-deserved credit to the unit as a whole.
"The Eagles remain the best offensive line in the game on paper. They lost a starter in the offseason, but 2022 draft pick Cam Jurgens is ready to step in to fill that void... Lane Johnson is the standard by which all right tackles are measured, particularly as Tristan Wirfs is moving to the left side in Tampa Bay. The last time he allowed a sack was the 2020 season."
- Sam Monson
We mentioned future Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Jason Peters earlier, but how's this for sauce? They still have two guys on the roster with resumes that are worthy of enshrinement into football's immortals at Canton, Ohio.
Lane Johnson is an obvious choice, but who can forget about Jason Kelce? How did we get this far into our take without mentioning the franchise legend?
Kelce hasn' missed a game since 2014. He again anchors the unit. They'll continue to clear holes in the running game and keep the opposition off of Jalen Hurts, and if they avoid the penalties, there's no telling how dominant they can be. They should be fun to watch.
