Eagles release former first-rounder but this may not end his story

And, just like that, John Ross has been released. This may not be the end of his Eagles story.

All signings are not created equally. Some move the needle a little harder. Some raise the temperature a little higher. Regardless of what someone accomplishes at the NFL level, where and when they were drafted will always be attached to their name. That's why, when the Philadelphia Eagles announced John Ross's acquisition in May, everyone raised their antenna.

Ross, a former first-round draft choice, was the ninth-overall selection made during the 2017 NFL Draft. He had just run a 4.22-second, 40-yard dash during the scouting combine.

The Cincinnati Bengals gave up on him after four seasons. He spent time with the New York Giants and Kansas City Chiefs before Philly gave him what we thought might be his last opportunity.

Ross has shown some flashes at camp, but per report, we have learned things may not have turned out as he'd like.

The Philadelphia Eagles have informed John Ross of his release per report.

Longtime NFL Insider Josina Anderson reports John Ross has been informed of his release. The news comes before the deadline for final roster cuts, one scheduled for 4 pm EST on Tuesday. This, however, may not be the end of his Eagles story.

Ross has done enough to possibly convince Philly there may be some value in continuing to invest in him. It's reasonable to state the expectation is that he might return as a practice squad member if he passes through waivers unclaimed.

At the time of this story's release, fellow wide receivers Austin Watkins and Griffin Hebert were also reportedly informed of their release. We'll see what happens when the initial 53-man roster is introduced.

If you're interested, there's an update on one of the rookie wideouts. Ainias Smith has suffered an injury. He may be an option for the non-season-ending IR (injured reserve). Time will tell if the Eagles agree.
