Eagles rumors: DeVonta Smith, Cam Jurgens pushing to play despite injury concerns
Christmas nears, and it's beginning to look a lot like a late-season collapse. We hope not. Every year, we discuss 'Super Bowl hangovers'. This offseason, we banked on this Philadelphia Eagles team being one of the exceptions to a rule we had seen play out so often. A 10-1 start to the 2023 regular-season campaign got the blood (and adrenaline) flowing. The recent three-game skid has us wondering if Birds fans need a mental health week.
Well, nothing says a bounce-back game is possible like the knowledge that Philly plays the hated New York Giants on Monday. An Eagles win would serve as a nice Christmas present, but to earn one the Birds might need to do so minus a few starters.
There's good news though. Some of the walking wounded is pushing to play.
The Eagles hope to have DeVonta Smith and Cam Jurgens available on Christmas versus the Giants. Both are doing all they can to be available.
Here's some good news. After missing consecutive practices on Thursday and Friday, DeVonta Smith returned to on-field duties on Saturday. Josh Tolentino of The Philadelphia Inquirer was told by league sources that he's 'pushing to play' on Monday.
Cam Jurgens was a full participant at Eagles practice on Thursday. He missed Week 15's game after missing practice all last week because of a pectoral injury. There's no way he'll be held out if he's cleared medically.
Check out Friday's full injury report.
Keep Avonte Maddox on your minds as well. Philly opened a 21-day practice window for him earlier in the week, and they can elevate him from the injured reserve to the 53-man roster at any time.
Update: Saturday at 5:00 p.m. EST
The Eagles released their Saturday afternoon status report just ahead of the 4 p.m. EST hour. Zach Cunningham (knee), Landon Dickerson (thumb), Avonte Maddox (pectoral), and Darius Slay (knee) are all out. Nicholas Morrow is questionable.
Philly figures to run more three-safety sets. Keep in mind the fact that they've been down Nakobe Dean most of the season. Cam Jurgens and DeVonta Smith STILL look like game-time decisions.
