Ben VanSumeren may fall victim to the numbers game and miss out on a shot of making the Eagles roster.

Just in case you're keeping track, following Davion Taylor's release. the Philadelphia Eagles have nine linebackers on the 90-man training camp roster. Unfortunately for Ben VanSumeren, he might be the ninth man on the depth chart. That isn't where you want to be, especially when your on-field reps and opportunities are going to be limited because... well... again, you're the ninth man on a nine-man depth chart.

Ben VanSumeren looks the part of an NFL linebacker. The only questions are about whether or not he can play like one. He's six-foot-two inches tall. He tips the scales at 237 pounds. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.77 seconds.

Stranger things have happened, but it seems unlikely that he'd catapult himself ahead of guys like Shaun Bradley and Christian Elliss to give himself a realistic shot at making this team's 53-man roster. Honestly, it seems unlikely that he'd also struggle to find his way onto the practice squad.

Injuries could occur. You never know how the chips may fall once the preseason gets underway, but right now, it feels like VanSumeren is auditioning for the chance to play elsewhere.
