Eagles veterans who could be left off 53-man roster to make room for rookies
K'Von Wallace, safety
The Eagles have five safeties on the training camp roster. They normally carry five on the regular-season roster with one being a key special teams player. Think about Chris Maragos or someone like Rudy Ford if you're looking for examples. Why then are we listing K'Von Wallace as a candidate for release? There are several reasons actually. Many of which you have probably already thought of.
K'Von is a decent football player and has shown value on special teams. He has also shown gradual improvement as he has been given more opportunities, but if we were to rank the Eagles' safeties from top to bottom, K'Von would be our fifth guy. He never morphed into what Philly hoped he would. Justin Evans is a better player right than K'Von is right now.
That could change in camp, but currently, that's where we stand. Terrell Edmunds isn't receiving a ton of discussions, but he's going to surprise anyone who is doubting him. The Pittsburgh Steelers were sad to let him go.
Fingers are crossed that Reed Blankenship can take another step forward, but if you'll remember, we hoped the same for Marcus Epps. The latter wound up being okay at best. That's why we wouldn't rule out the possibility of Howie Roseman adding another body to this unit late.
Even if he does so, rookie Sydney Brown is safe. He'll make the team, and we expect him to be special. Don't be shocked if K'Von makes the initial 53-man roster. Don't be shocked if he doesn't. Again, a surprise acquisition could change this unit's appearance quickly.
