Former Eagles DBs coach Leslie Frazier is a 2023 Black College Football Hall of Fame inductee
New Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Sean Desai is under a lot of pressure as he enters his first season with the franchise. Believe it or not, in some ways, Leslie Frazier has something to do with that, even if the part he plays is minimal.
Having served on Jim Johnson's defensive coaching staff, Frazier was a key component of one of the most beloved defenses in franchise history. Ask any Birds fan, and most of them will tell you. When we think about defense in the City of Brotherly Love during the modern football era, three names come up commonly: Buddy Ryan, Bud Carson, and Jim Johnson.
Okay, here's the thing. Maybe all of that is a stretch. It has been 21 years, more than two decades since Frazier served as the Eagles' defensive backs under head coach Andy Reid and defensive coordinator Jim Johnson. With that being said, his run with Philly and Desai's coming coaching era genuinely have nothing to do with one another, but we'll never forget the impact he had while leading a unit that featured everyone from Al Harris and Brian Dawkins to Troy Vincent, Bobby Taylor, and Michael Lewis.
Trust us on this one. Frazier's fingerprints are all over some of those great Eagles teams, so when we see him succeed, we smile. Recently, he earned another honor.
Former Eagles defensive backs coach Leslie Frazier is now a member of the 2023 Black College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2023.
You missed a treat if you weren't present. The 14th Annual Black College Football Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held on June 10th of 2023 at the Black College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia. Eight members joined this fantastic fraternity:
Leslie Frazier (Alcorn State University), Coach Pete Richardson (Southern University, Winston Salem State University). Albert Lewis (Grambling State University), Jim Marsalis (Tennessee State University), Henry “Killer” Lawrence (Florida A&M University), Tyrone McGriff (Florida A&M University), Elijah Pitts (Philander Smith College), and Johnnie Walton (Elizabeth City State University).
Congratulations and a tip of the cap are in order for all of these extraordinary men. As stated earlier, it has been a long time since Frazier paced the sidelines with Andy Reid and Jim Johnson, but in many cases, if you were ever an Eagle, you're an Eagle through and through. Frazier's blood has some midnight green traces in it.
Leslie was present during one of the more exciting times to be a fan and cover this Eagles team, 1999-2002). He has also beaten the Birds as an interim and full-time head coach on more than one occasion (Week 16 of the 2012 season and Week 15 of the 2013 NFL season). We'll see him again this season come Week 12 when the Buffalo Bills visit Lincoln Financial Field.
