Former Giant replaces the jabs he threw at Saquon Barkley with olive branches
Honestly, we were beginning to believe we had figured Tiki Barber out. His inner thermometer doesn't work. There's no way it could. That's what we told ourselves. We had felt like that before, but his statements about Saquon Barkley after the latter joined the Philadelphia Eagles almost pushed us over the edge. We couldn't believe what we were hearing.
What's that? Sure, no one has an inner thermometer. We realize that, but everyone should possess a mechanism that tells them when something they are about to utter should be left unsaid, especially when one begins throwing stones from glass houses. Ladies and gentlemen, if you missed parts of this story, buckle up. You are in for a treat!
Tiki Barber extends an olive branch months after his mini-war of words with new Eagles star Saquon Barkley.
If you missed the story this past March, you certainly aren't going to believe what was said about Saquon Barkley. Well... Then again, you might, but you most certainly aren't going to believe who had the gall to say it. Raise your hand if you remember that Tiki Barber fellow.
"He's dead to us now. He's dead to us. You're dead to us, Saquon..." Those were Tiki's words on his highly popular Evan and Tiki show on WFAN radio, words uttered after it was announced that Saquon had joined the Birds. Don't take our word for it. Take a look for yourselves.
Saquon fired back on social media by offering a stern warning. He stated that Barber had been a "hater" during the former Penn State star's time in New York. He also warned him not to "smile in my face when you see me.”
Barkley's biggest issue, as he told Jason and Travis Kelce during an appearance on their New Heights podcast, was Tiki used his platform to enrage Giants fans further. Our biggest issue was something else. We thought Tiki was the last person who should attempt to revoke a Giants pass for any reason.
Isn't this the same guy who retired from the Giants and bashed Eli Manning? Didn't the Giants get better without him and win a Super Bowl following that? Wait! Didn't we see him get booed by the Giants faithful?
Did we miss something? When did Tiki become the Giants' spokesperson? Maybe he worked his way back into their good graces as a radio host.
We'll be honest. We don't listen to a ton of Tiki Barner on the radio. We really never have much of a reason to do so, but normally, when something he says is highlighted, he makes us want to rip our insides out.
No, that isn't an exaggeration. This time around, however, he managed to say something that was a tad more tolerable.
“He’s going to be great, That’s why we hate it (his decision to sign with Philly). If he were washed, we wouldn’t care. He’s still in his prime, and he’s going to rush for 1,500 yards, and probably 400 of those will come against us.” Those were the words of a more pleasant Tiki Barber during a recent interview with The Philadelphia Inquirer. Check out Rob Tornoe's story when you have a minute.
Now, had Tiki led with that, cooler heads may have prevailed early. Oh well... We're biased. Saquon is one of us now. That's probably why we care so much, but none of that matters. Barber says he hasn't spoken with Barkley since the latter left the G-Men, but what's important is the olive branch has been extended.
That does lead us to the following thought though.
They say "once a Raider, always a Raider". They don't have a similar narrative for being an Eagle and leaving, but hey, we cheered for Dick Vermeil when he left. We also pulled for Randall Cunningham and Cris Carter when they had that great season in Minnesota.
Occasionally, we'll watch former Birds players and coaches and cheer for them (or against them), but what the Giants, their fans, and legends do is on another level. It's almost like watching that friend who got dumped but never moved on.
Come on guys! You have to do a better job there.
