Highlight Chris Godwin on a list of Buccaneers the Eagles can't underestimate
It's Week 4. The Philadelphia Eagles meet an NFC South team for the second time in as many weeks. This time, they get the reigning kings of the division. This is a road date. Raymond James Stadium provides the backdrop. Let's hope we don't hear those damn annoying cannons.
If it feels like the Eagles always end up playing a road game in Tampa, it's because they do. This is the fourth straight season the Birds have flown south to Florida. Two of the past three meetings have come during the postseason.
These teams have met 23 times since the Bucs first season in 1977. Six of those meetings were in the NFL Playoffs. Tampa holds a 4-2 edge in those meetings. They've won five of the past six head-to-head tilts that has given them a 12-11 edge overall.
Philly hopes to even the series at 12 wins apiece. They have an amazing opportunity to get that done.
The Buccaneers' offense is worthy of a discussion.
A former Eagles assistant, Todd Bowles is the captain of the ship. Offense isn't his specialty. His offensive coordinator, Liam Coen, is in his first season with the Bucs. They have some great players at their disposal.
Chris Godwin, wide receiver
Chris Godwin is a tough matchup for any NFL cornerback, but he spends a ton of his time in the slot. That means Avonte Maddox draws the duty of defending him as it appears he's the guy Philly wants on the field.
Tristin Wirfs, left tackle
Tristin Wirfs is the bodyguard defending Baker Mayfield's blindside. Philly's pass rush has registered four sacks all season, and having to get around this guy won't make the job easier.
Mike Evans, wide receiver
He's one of the best in the business. Mike Evans has hauled in ten receptions this season. He has reached the end zone twice. In six career games versus the Eagles, including two postseason games, he has notched 33 receptions for 398 yards and has reached the end zone four times.
Yep! He is certainly a problem, and he always has been.
Cade Otton, tight end
Tight ends can cause Vic Fangio's defensive scheme some issues if they're talented. Cade Otton is most certainly such. Philly's linebackers aren't exactly great coverage guys. We'll see what happens on Sunday in Week 4.
Baker Mayfield, quarterback
Baker Mayfield's numbers are as follows: 82 attempts... 61 completions... 637 yards passing... Six TDs and two interceptions... 13 sacks and an 110.7 rating...
Stay tuned...
Todd Bowles' defense isn't short on talent.
Yep! This is Todd Bowles' side of the ball here, and he's good at what he does. Tampa doesn't have a true defensive coordinator, but with a mind like Bowles', it's hard to notice. His scheme has historically given the Birds problems.
Jamel Dean, cornerback
We'll be rolling once we figure out who the Eagles' receivers are. We know who the Bucs' corners are, and Jamel Dean is one of their starters. He leads all Bucs defenders in solo tackles (20) and total stops (28), but that may be because the ball goes his way frequently, often with success.
He gave up 75 yards in Week 2 and 80 yards in Week 3.
Jordan Whitehead, safety
Jordan Whitehead is as good as they come at the safety position. He'll be patrolling the backend of the defense all game long.
Lavonte David, linebacker
The Bucs didn't stress too much about letting a former first-rounder out of the door. Guys like Lavonte David is part of the reason why. Perhaps you've heard Devin White's story. He's in Philly and can't get on the field, but we'll certainly see David on Sunday.
SirVocea Dennis, linebacker
SirVocea Dennis will certainly be in the LB mix with David and K.J. Britt. So far, Dennis boasts 22 tackles and one of Tampa's pair of sacks on the season.
C.J. Brewer, defensive tackle
Expect to see a lot of C.J. Brewer in this one as Tampa's best defensive linemen are banged up. The Eagles' running game might get a break here though. Calijah Kancey won't play, and the Bucs' best defensive lineman is questionable (more on that in a second).
Worth mentioning: Five Buccaneers are questionable for Sunday. One is doubtful.
We've discussed the Eagles' injuries all week, but Tampa's are pretty extensive. Check out the number of players on this list.
We'd assume most of the 'questionable' guys are playing, but the Bucs are certainly shorthanded. Antoine Winfield Jr. is out, and if Vea can't go, Philly's chances of winning improve exponentially.
