Jalen Hurts Week 1 report card: Eagles win but QB1 delivers mixed bag
We can't tell you how much fun it was to enjoy a stress-free Sunday. There's nothing like enjoying some football when your team has already added a win to the ledger. The Philadelphia Eagles are 1-0!
Ten days separate Friday night's game in Brazil from their game on Monday Night Football. Wait! That means next Sunday is stress-free too! We can dig it. Trust us. We'll have plenty of time for nail-biting.
Franchise quarterbacks are hard to come by. That's why so many QBs are drafted annually. The Eagles are in a good spot though. They have most certainly found their guy in Jalen Hurts.
If your favorite team has found its guy, your squad can land among perennial contenders. There's a catch though. Doing so is harder than it sounds.
Philly, despite winning in Week 1, didn't make it easy on themselves. That happens in the NFL, but it's more fun to adjust after winning.
Jalen Hurts will most certainly watch a ton of film next week. There's a lot to discuss after what was, at times, a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde performance.
Jalen Hurts' first outing birthed mixed reviews, but he is talented enough to turn things around.
Jalen Hurts can't be praised for everything that went well for the Eagles in Week 1. He also can't be blamed for everything that irritated us.
In the end, he'll be critiqued. That's the job. That's why he makes so much money.
We may as well start now. Following several Week 1 rewatches, here's what we think about his overseas performance versus the Packers.
Jalen Hurts' Best Throws
QB1 laid out some nice throws in this one. This may sound like cheating, but we'll bring up his TD tosses as our reference.
Sure, every TD toss is a good one right? That's probably true, but we saw some touch we were impressed with.
Facing a 2nd-and-11 scenario and with 12:45 left in the second quarter, he lofted one on a wheel route that found Saquon Barkley as he beat two defenders.
That was pretty. The same can be said about this next one.
Philly took the opening second-half kickoff. It only took 38 seconds to explore a nice idea. Go deep to AJ Brown.
We'll give him passing grades for both of those throws. That was fun to watch.
Jalen Hurts' Worst Throws
For the most part, Jalen protected the football, but his mistakes were huge. He fumbled twice and lost one of those, though the first can be blamed on a bad snap.
Only the Good Lord in Heaven knows what he was thinking during a pair of interceptions that were tossed. His first occurred deep in Eagles territory and immediately set up the Packers in scoring position. His second was even worse. That one ruined an Eagles scoring opportunity.
Philly was in a position to at least put three points on the board, but Jalen committed two of the ultimate sins, throwing back across his body and throwing late across the middle of the field.
What makes that second pick even worse is it came immediately on the heels of a swing pass to Jahan Dotson that also almost got picked off. It seems like Jalen would have been more careful after that.
He'll learn from those, but yeah... That stuff can't happen for a QB who is this good.
Analysis
He did some good things and made some mistakes. He could have been aided by better playcalling. We can do without so many designed QB runs, but we don't want Philly to eliminate those from the offensive playbook either.
Here's the big takeaway. QB1 put his team in some bad spots unnecessarily. That made this game tougher than it needed to be. Still, there was more good than bad, and the Eagles don't win this game without him.

While it was obvious early that the Eagles were the better team, they allowed the Packers to hang around. It didn't cost Philly this time, but they need to be sharper or eventually it will.
