Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter earn their first sacks as Eagles, Jordan shares his with a teammate
It took more than 57 minutes for a team that notched 70 sacks a season ago to earn their first of the new campaign, but they did it! The Philadelphia Eagles defense, when they absolutely had to, got to Mac Jones for their first sack of the 2022 NFL season.
That normally wouldn't force us to pull out the highlighter. Sure, it helped place the New England Patriots behind the chains. The timing was cool. A Jalen Hurts turnover had placed Philly's defense in a bad position. There was also the penalty and the failed fourth-down conversion that followed, but this is a sack that has some added significance. It was the first of Jordan Davis' young career.
Well, it was the first half-sack of Jordan Davis' career. He'll share this one with Josh Sweat.
A good friend of his got in on the action shortly thereafter.
Jalen Carter racks up the quarterback pressures but finally gets home for the first sack of his young Eagles career.
They say good things come to those who wait. If you're like the rest of us, you spent much of Week 1's game paying attention to the 2023 NFL Draft's ninth-overall selection. Number 98, Jalen Carter, had himself a day.
For much of the first and second half, he harassed Mac Jones, creating pressure and forcing the Pats signal-caller to look at the rush from time to time. The stats weren't eye-poppng. The sacks eluded him, but the young man stayed patient. Eventually it all paid off. With less than one minute remaining, on second down no less, he found his way home and placed his first sack as a professional on his resume.
As our tweet says, count that as the first of many.
Well, it wasn't pretty, but things worked out in the end. The Eagles place a checkmark in the win column, thanks in part to their Philly Dawgs on the interior of the defensive line. Philadelphia's next game comes on Thursday night in their home-opener versus the Minnesota Vikings. Hopefully, the rust will be fully knocked off for that one.
