Kenny Pickett is a good Eagles backup option should any emergencies occur

As strange as it sounds, it's still hard to believe that Kenny Pickett is a part of this Philadelphia Eagles organization. We pinched ourselves. We were indeed awake. Every time we look at the roster, his name is still on it. That's as good a sign as any.

Wow... Okay... We weren't dreaming, but it's still like fate is having its way with us... or having its way with him. Born in New Jersey... Forged by Ocean Township and five years with the Pitt Panthers... Drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers... Current QB2 of the Eagles... Another chapter will be written this season.

Don't expect to see a ton of Kenny Pickett this season, but he's a nice backup option for the Eagles should any emergencies occur.

One might say that Pickett was born to play in Philly. After all, he has cheered for the Eagles since his youth. Still childhood loyalties have nothing to do with building a roster, and if Kenny can't play, this love affair will lose its steam quickly.

Fear not friends. The Birds have something in this young man.

The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner for 2021, Pickett was also a First-Team All-American that season after also being named ACC Player of the Year, ACC Offensive Player of the Year, and a First-team All-ACC nod. He'd be named 2022 ACC Athlete of the Year one year later.

He was selected during the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft as the 20th overall selection. Things didn't work out in Pittsburgh, but he seems to have landed on his feet in the City of Brotherly Love.

Pickett is now Jalen Hurts backup, a young star with immense talent (and a similar skill set). Philly moved on from last season's offensive coordinator, Brian Johnson, but they upgraded by adding Kellen Moore.

Kevin Patullo is the offensive passing game coordinator and associate head coach. This is his fourth season with Philadelphia. Doug Nussmeier is the quarterbacks coach. He brings over 20 years of coaching experience with him. In 2023, he was the L.A. Chargers' QBs coach. Five seasons in Dallas preceded that.

Kenny Pickett is in good hands, but don't expect to see much of him on the field this season. Again, this is Jalen Hurts' team, but there's an old football saying. 'The most popular player on a football team is its backup quarterback'. We haven't heard that often recently, but Pickett has a fan club. Let's make this clear though. THERE ARE NO QB CONTROVERSEYS BREWING.

Jalen will start. Kenny is the backup, but this is Philly. Expect both to be discussed constantly.

One of the more talked about stories coming out of Philly's mandatory minicamp was the 'Kenny Pickett looks better than Jalen Hurts' angle. While that sent a few minor shockwaves through the Eagles community, it would be wise to avoid overreaction. We're talking about contact-free practices and guys running around in shorts.

But, if an emergency should ever come and if the glass is ever broken, the Birds might have something in Mr. Pickett.

QB3, Tanner McKee, is immobile, but there is potential there as well. This trio at signal-caller looks better than it did with Marcus Mariota. Philly's quarterback room, with Hurts, Pickett, and McKee, has just as much potential as what Dallas has with Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush, and Trey Lance.

We'd rank Rush behind Jalen and Dak. We'd rank Pickett and McKee ahead of Lance. What is that saying? No QB room is perfect, but Philly is in pretty good shape.

Maybe it was fate that brought Kenny home. Maybe that's an overhyped theory, but the Eagles have upgraded at the backup quarterback position because the ceiling here is higher than what they had with Mariota.
