Latest injury update leaves Eagles dangerously thin at wide receiver against Bucs

This isn't exactly ideal.

This weekend, the Philadelphia Eagles get their opportunity for a revenge game from last year's playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Both teams enter this contest with a record of 2-1 making it one of the better matchups of Week 4. However, the Eagles are likely going to be at a significant disadvantage, offensively.

Star wide receiver A.J. Brown has missed the last two games while working his way back from a hamstring injury and, even though he was originally slated to miss a couple of games, it isn't looking good for Brown in Week 4. He has not practiced yet this week, as NFL Network's Ian Rapoport pointed out Friday morning.

Rapoport noted that Brown has of course missed a couple games and will likely miss Week 4 as well, but then alluded to Brown's "partner in crime," DeVonta Smith, and the concussion he's been dealing with.

"He (Smith) has not been at practice. Looks like he's going to miss another game, too. So, the Philadelphia Eagles go in this week without two of their top receivers," Rapoport said.

The Eagles are going to be extremely short at wide receiver in Week 4

If Brown and Smith are indeed out, the Eagles will roll into this matchup with only Jahan Dotson and rookie Johnny Wilson being the regular members of this roster. Reserve wideout Britain Covey was recently placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, joining rookie Ainias Smith. Last week, Covey played a bit and caught his lone target for 11 yards.

That means Philly will have to call up some of their practice squad members, likely including veteran Parris Campbell. Against the Saints in Week 3, Campbell caught both of his targets for 13 yards.

Other practice squad options at wide receiver include: John Ross, Danny Gray, Kyle Philips and undrafted rookie Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint.

Last weekend, Smith accounted for seven receptions on 10 targets for 79 yards, which leaves the door wide open for a chunk of targets to some of the practice squad call-ups. It's either these reserves get a long look, or tight end Dallas Goedert has another outing which ends up being the game of his life.

Again going back to last week against New Orleans, Goedert notched 10 receptions on 11 targets for a whopping 170 yards.

It's safe to say that the Eagles may end up needing that type of performance out of Goedert for the second-straight week if they're going to avenge that playoff loss to the Bucs.
