Less expensive options than L'Jarius Sneed for Vic Fangio's Eagles defense

Believe it or not, if the Eagles are in the market for a cornerback, there are other options besides trading for L'Jarius Sneed.

The L'Jarius Sneed discussions refuse to die. The rumors connecting him to the Philadelphia Eagles aren't going anywhere either. Don't shoot the messengers, but with all the narratives that have caught fire recently, there was this unction to address the topic.

Yes, we realize Philly already has expensive corners on the roster, Darius Slay and James Bradberry. Heck, the slot guy is even expensive, but there are issues. They are as follows.

The starters on the outside are both over 30 years of age. One is regressing. Avonte Maddox can't stay healthy, and all of the backups, though there are many, are relatively unproven.

That being said, if there are any chances of Philly adding Sneed, they must explore them. That's why we're all here, because, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Kansas City Chiefs have permitted him to seek a trade partner. There are, however, a few things that must be taken into consideration.

Let's say that trade partner winds up being the Eagles. The theory is Philly will have to acquire him by mortgaging a high draft pick. They'd also need to sign him to a multi-year deal. That being said, it may be wise to explore other options.

Here are four less expensive options for the Eagles than trading for and extending L'Jarius Sneed.

Howie Roseman is the best in the business. He doesn't need our advice, but that doesn't mean we won't offer it anyway. If we were in his shoes, which we aren't, here are a few options we'd explore if the plan became trying to find a cheaper option than trading for L'Jarius Sneed.

1. Sign potential free agent Kendall Fuller

Things change quickly in the NFL, but unless that happens in Commanders land, Kendall Fuller will wind up dipping in the free agency pool. He's a nice option.

Fuller may also be the best free agent at the cornerback position not named Jaylon Johnson. Another thing Fuller brings to the table is he can play slot corner and safety.

2. Select any of the cornerbacks in the coming NFL Draft

One of the criticisms of the modern Eagles is they haven't been able to draft and develop young players with the same effectiveness that they have been able to sign established players.

That has to change. Philly may also want to invest early draft capital into their defensive backs. This is a great year to do so.

This draft class is loaded with talent at the position. All of them would be less expensive options than signing Sneed though L'Jarius is also more proven.

3. Pursue potential free agent Chidobe Awuzie

The Bengals are franchising Tee Higgins. They have to find some kind of way to get D.J. Reader extended. Yeah... Something tells us Chidobe Awuzie is walking.

He isn't as talented as L'Jarius Sneed, Jaylon Johnson, or Kendall Fuller, but he'd be a solid addition if Philly explores free agency to address their needs at the position. Put an asterisk by his name. We'll revisit this later.

4. Reacquire Steven Nelson or take a chance on Kenny Moore II

Admittedly, this is the option we like the least. We've seen Steven Nelson in an Eagles jersey before. He wasn't great. He wasn't awful. Kenny Moore may satisfy Philly's need for depth at slot corner, but he may not give them much of anything else.

Both will be among the more sought-after cornerback options during the free agency frenzy. Both, however, present a bit of a gamble.

Stephon Gilmore is a better option than both. Then again, Stephon is also old and living off a reputation that may not accurately describe who he is currently. Again, all of these are options though we aren't huge fans of them.
