Sua Opeta trades Eagles green for those ugly Buccaneers jerseys
Free agency rolls on, and we've been so busy welcoming guys like Saquon Barkley and Bryce Huff to the nest that we've forgotten all about the familiar faces that the Philadelphia Eagles had to make decisions on. As quickly as guys have arrived, others have moved on.
D'Andre Swift has joined T.J. Edwards in the Windy City as a member of the Chicago Bears. Jack Stoll, Nicholas Morrow, and Marcus Mariota are also gone. As we close the book on March's first half, another domino has fallen.
Sua Opeta leaves the Eagles to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
According to a report by Rick Stroud, Sua leaves the Eagles to help protect the newly-minted Baker Mayfield. The deal is of the one-year, prove-it variety.
It's going to be hard to cheer for our guy Sua though. First, the Bucs play in the National Football Conference, so there's that. There's also the extended rivalry angle. It's hard to look at those ugly Bucs jerseys without thinking of some bad memories.
The disdain for Tampa doesn't quite equal the unexplainable amounts of hatred we harbor for the New York Giants or Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but every time we think of the final game at Veterans Stadium, the first game played at Lincoln Financial Field, or the past two blowout losses to Tampa during the postseason we cringe.
Philly's starting offensive line is set with Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, Lane Johnson, and presumably the winner of the battle for the starting right tackle position. Sua's departure probably means more depth is needed as along the interior as he was one of Philly's top reserves.
We'll see how things go toward thee end of April. Philly might address the need by using some draft capital, but we'll see how things go once the 2024 NFL Draft arrives.
