DeVonta Smith, Darius Slay won't play in Eagles vs. Giants game: Latest Week 18 injury updates
One Philadelphia Eagles game remains. We feel it's a winnable affair, but that's what we were feeling ahead of Week 17's debacle versus the Arizona Cardinals. Hey, what can we say? Sue us! Confidence is shaken around these parts. We haven't given up, but it is what it is.
Here's where we all can find comfort. Week 18's game is versus the New York Giants, a team that Philly rarely loses to. The Birds have taken five in a row over their rivals. Hopefully, another win comes on Sunday.
Let's talk about some injuries. There was talk that DeVonta Smith and Darius Slay might play in Week 18. On Friday, we received an update.
DeVonta Smith, Darius Slay Injury Status for Week 18 game against Giants
After seeing DeVonta Smith get injured as a lead blocker on a 3rd-and-20 screen pass to Kenneth Gainwell, Eagles fans were up in arms. The thoughts, after seeing him leave Lincoln Financial Field in a walking boot were that he might be lost for a while.
We later learned that his injury wasn't as serious as we had imagined. No one should be happier than the Eagles' coaching staff, but DeVonta sat out of Eagles practice sessions on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Darius Slay was a limited participant in Wednesday and Thursday practice sessions, but he sat out at the Friday session. He hasn't played since Week 14's loss in Dallas.
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni stated earlier in the week that he believed they could play on Sunday if need be, but Friday's injury/status report says they'll sit Week 18's game out.
DeVonta Smith injury history
This is DeVonta Smith's first notable injury. He's slim in stature, but he is tough. He hasn't missed a game before this one in his NFL career.
Darius Slay injury history
Darius Slay has dealt with calf injuries and Grade1 concussions in his past, but he hasn't ever missed a ton of extended time prior to this knee injury. The veteran, other than a few nicks and bruises here and there, has enjoyed a relatively healthy career.
Who would replace DeVonta Smith and Darius Slay in the lineup?
Rookie Kelee Ringo will replace Darius Slay. The theory is, that with DeVonta being ruled out, his snaps would likely be split between Julio Jones and Olamide Zaccheaus.
When are DeVonta Smith and Darius Slay Coming Back?
As stated earlier, Nick Sirianni seemingly believed DeVonta, Darius, and Zach Cunningham could return to work for Week 18's game if necessary. Cunningham practiced in a limited capacity on Wednesday before being a full participant on Thursday and Friday. That leads us to believe that even though Smith and Slay aren't playing in Week 18, they could play in the Wild Card Round.
