Maybe it's something in the water or the mindset. Maybe the 80s and 90s were a completely different time. Perhaps both statements are true. Whatever it is, some Philadelphia Eagles fans among us, many of whom will remain nameless, would have benefited from being more mature at a younger age like the members of the 2024 rookie class. They just get it. They're a group that is wise beyond their years.
This is a group that was asked to grow up quickly. Quinyon Mitchell was a day-one starter. Cooper DeJean dealt with injury during training camp and the preseason. He didn't play as much earlier in the regular season, but once inserted into the starting lineup, he's been just as good as advertised if not better.
Talk about that 'Dawg Mentality'!
Quinyon Mitchell has an answer for those questions about his Defensive Rookie of the Year chances.
Is it just us? Maybe we're mad excited, but discussing this Eagles rookie class without beaming is tough. Two of these guys are obvious stars (Mitchell and DeJean).
Several other guys represent the opportunity for an underdog story (Will Shipley, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Johnny Wilson). The O-lineman is a beast, He's just fixated on the depth chart behind Pro Bowl-caliber players and guys who are more experienced.
Then, there's Jalyx Hunt. There's something there. Once he gets in a rhythm, Philly may have another star on their hands.
Now, what do we make of Ainias Smith? He's the wild card. He's also injured. DeJean is a legitimate Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate, but if we're being honest, he'll probably finish no higher than fifth.
Quinyon, Philly's first-round selection has an opportunity to take the trophy. He currently has the best odds to do so, but we mentioned that 'Dawg Mentality'. He has his sights set on higher goals.
What can we say? We respect that. We mentioned the maturity of this group early. This world would be a different place if everyone had this type of mindset at 23 years of age.
The Eagles coaching staff and the front office truly believe in everyone they selected this past April. We concur. Here's the best part, and we may have said this before. They're still figuring things out. They have a chance to grow up together and get better.
Come on! Are you not entertained?
