The Philadelphia Eagles made their way back to the Super Bowl for the second time in three years due, in some part, to some of the very shrewd coordinator moves that Nick Sirianni instituted in the offseason. It's hard to find a better coordinator duo in the NFC than what Philadelphia has at their disposal.
The decision to scrap the Sean Desai/Matt Patricia experiment on defense and Brian Johnson commandeering the offense led to Kellen Moore running the offense and defensive juggernaut Vic Fangio in charge of one of the NFL's best units. The results have been splendid.
The Houston Texans are trying to recapture that same magic, as they fired offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik following a slight regression from second-year quarterback CJ Stroud. Their rumored plan to replace him could be a nightmare if Eagles fans have anything to say about it.
According to Jordan Schultz, Houston is interviewing Johnson, who is currently the assistant head coach and passing game coordinator for the Washington Commanders, to fill their offensive coordinator vacancy. Houston can't afford to fall into the same trap that Philly did in 2023.
Texans could hire failed former Eagles OC Brian Johnson
While Johnson's offense may have graded out as statistically impressive, it's not too difficult to have at least a league-average offense with Jalen Hurts, AJ Brown, and Devonta Smith (just to name a few) taking up space. Johnson's inability to stop the downward slide at the end of the 2023 season led to his dismissal.
Moore has been so impressive as an offensive coordinator that he helped Saquon Barkley run for 2,000 yards. Moore's stint in Philly after taking over for Johnson may not last very long, as he is reportedly the leader in the clubhouse for the vacant New Orleans Saints head coaching job.
Johnson may have studied under the watchful eye of Kliff Kingsbury, but due to how involved the former Cardinals head coach can be with the overall structure of the offense, is it fair to wonder how much Johnson has been doing during his lone season in Washington?
Johnson may need one or two more years of experience under Kingsbury and Daniels before anyone should think about giving him another OC job. With the Texans in need of someone who can help Stroud go from good to great, Johnson's work with Hurts last season doesn't paint a very impressive picture of what he can do.
