A lot of wide eyes among the Philadelphia Eagles fan base when they saw the contract extension that the new Los Angeles Rams cornerback, Trent McDuffie, got.

McDuffie was part of a trade that sent him from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Rams for multiple draft picks, including a first-round selection. Since that trade, Los Angeles and McDuffie have been working on getting a new contract in place for him to join the team long term.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the Rams and McDuffie agreed on a four-year, $124 million contract extension, with $100 million guaranteed. This deal makes him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history, which doesn't exactly bode well for the Eagles in the next year or two.

Eagles affected big time by Trent McDuffie's record-setting contract

Why is this such a big deal for the Eagles? Well, as Eagles fans can imagine, this is going to have a massive impact on contract negotiations with cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean over the next year or two.

Mitchell still has his fifth-year option to be picked up next year if the Eagles want to, since he was a first-round pick in 2023. DeJean, on the other hand, is only on a four-year deal, so the 2027 offseason would be the time to negotiate a new contract.

Last season was a memorable one for Mitchell and DeJean, who dominated the NFL as two of the best cornerbacks. They helped lead one of the top-five pass defenses in the NFL and were selected to their first All-Pro and Pro Bowl teams.

With McDuffie getting a contract worth $31 million per year, Eagles fans have to assume Mitchell and DeJean could command the same kind of money. DeJean might get less since he is a nickel corner, but Mitchell, being an outside corner who faces number one receivers weekly, could be in line to shatter that record.

Philly has other contract extensions to worry about, but now an idea is set on what kind of money DeJean and Mitchell will command. It isn't going to be cheap.
