InsidetheIggles Draft Diary: Day 2

I’m back for Day 2 of the NFL draft. Stay tuned for more in-depth analysis and sharp wit. After a great first day, let’s hope for more of the same today. Here we go:
6:51 pm EST: Birds close out the 2009 draft by taking LB Moise Fokou. What’s the deal with these names today? Reid must be a fan of vowels. Anyone who doesn’t think the Eagles had a great draft I say, “Fok-ou!” I’m done. It’s been fun. Thanks to all of you who endured my Draft Diary ramblings. I’ll be back later tonight to recap Day 2. Until then….
5:52 pm EST: I dislike ESPN’s Michael Smith immensely. I’m not even sure why. The guy is just irritating.
5:45 pm EST: Eagles go with OG, Paul Fanaika from Arizona State. Reid loves his lineman, especially guys who are 6′5″, 325. It’s all about bodies, folks. Fanaika and Tupou should star in a buddy cop movie.
5:30 pm EST: Sheldon still moaning about being traded. I warned against this kind of crap. He can easily be replaced by Hobbs who is four years younger. These guys need to understand they can’t play these games with the FO.
5:22 pm EST: Iggs have three 7th round picks. Please trade them all.
5:01 pm EST: Browns took James Davis, running back from Clemson. I saw him play in person a couple times. He has ability, but very inconsistent. Could make a nice backup.
4:55 pm EST: Eagles nab WR Brandon Gibson. Don’t know much about him. Went to Wash. St. – 6′o”, 210 lbs. Inside, slot receiver.
4:44 pm EST: Singletary on the Net. Does he ever not look pissed? Birds are coming up quickly. Cowboys drafted a kicker two years after taking Nick Folk. They have no clue what they are doing and I love it.
4:21 pm EST: It’s a friggin’ love fest on the Net set. Mayock and Gruden called the Birds Super Bowl faves. I reject talk like that in April, but what are you gonna do. I’m sure all this initial excitement will turn into more whining by Wednesday. I hate to do it, but I have to commend the Giants on their draft: Nicks, Sintim, Andre Brown, Beatty and Beckum are all good players. Barden was a reach, but they got him cheap.
3:35 pm EST: I need a break. My keyboard is about to explode.
3:30 pm EST: Birds get a 5th next year, a 7th this year. Not bad. Already added a third rounder in 2010. By the way, Rashad Jennings has still not been drafted.
3:27 pm EST: A trade with the Saints. Not sure what they got in return.
3:23 pm EST: Iggs are on deck, again. My fingers need a rest.
3:16 pm EST: Yet another pick: Fenuki Tupou, a tackle from Oregon. 6′6″, 330. A third round grade. More depth behind Peters and Andrews.
3:08 pm EST: Birds grab another cornerback, Victor “Macho” Harris. Another DB? Wow, they have a bunch. He could project as a safety.
2:54 pm EST: Reid does it again. The pick is Cornelius Ingram. Great athlete who can stretch the field. Is his knee okay? Let’s hope he’s another 5th round gem.
2:52 pm EST: Birds are up. What about Duke Robinson? James Casey just went to the Texans.
2:45 pm EST: Two picks away. Will it be Ingram? The way today is going, it would make too much sense.
2:41 pm EST: Leave it to the Bengals to draft a punter. Why, oh why??
2:24 pm EST: Ten picks to go until the Eagles pick, maybe, at 153. If Ingram is there, do they pull the trigger? I’d say it would be another high value decision. The dude was rated as a second or third round talent.
2:16 pm EST: Bears just made an intriguing selection. Speedster Johnny Knox. If he can beat a jam, he could be a nice 5th round steal.
2:13 pm EST: Looking at the Birds’ roster, it looks pretty stacked. A backup tight end and a little more depth on the offensive line is all that’s needed. How many return guys do the have? DeSean, Demps, Maclin and now Hobbs. Geesh.
1:57 pm EST: Still about 18 picks away from their next pick. What do you guys think of the Hobbs deal??
1:47 pm EST: I like the trade for Hobbs. He’ll add solid depth and can return kicks. I have no idea if this spells the end for Sheldon, but you have to wonder. If nothing else, he provides excellent insurance in the secondary.
1:32 pm EST: Eagles traded two 5th round picks to Pats to get cornerback Ellis Hobbs. Nice move to land a vet cornerback. What does this mean for Sheldon??
1:22 pm EST: Fifth round love: Trent Cole, Celek and Gaither. Maybe Reid has this thing figured out. Bills just used the 4th rounder Iggs gave them to take Shawn Nelson. Top-rated tight ends are all but gone.
1:11 pm EST: Just watched an interview with Maclin. Impressive dude. Not an ounce of arrogance. If he can pick up the offense, he could be special.
12:51 pm EST: Since the Birds don’t pick for another 6 hours, I think I’ll eat some lunch. One note: Cornelius Ingram’s knee is a concern to several teams.
12:29 pm EST: Ugh. Day 2 is dragggggginnnnnnngggggg….
12:25 pm EST: A tight end name to remember: John Nalbone. Eagles worked him out.
12:22 pm EST: They just busted out the Maclin and McCoy #1 and #2 jerseys. They look sweet!!!
12:15 pm EST: Stupid ESPN still showing the Eagles having the 121st pick. Uh, hello!! It was traded to the Bills when they traded for Jason Peters.
12:14 pm EST: Round four is underway. Iggs need to get back into this!!
12:08 pm EST: Bengals nabbed Chase Coffman. Another TE off the board. No way Birds would draft two players from Mizzou. I still think Cornelius Ingram is their guy, but they’ll have to trade up to get him.
11:57 am EST: Cardinals pick Rashad Johnson. If the Eagles didn’t have Demps and Sean Jones, I think they would have seriously considered him.
11:52 am EST: At this point, you have to believe they will get back into the fourth round, if they can. Ingram, Nelson and Coffman still on the board.
11:47 am EST: I called it. Another trade. Eagles get a third rounder in 2010 and another 5th and 7th rounder this year for sending the 91st to Seattle. I knew crazy Reid would be back.
11:44 am EST: Birds traded 91st with Seattle. Stupid NFL Net took down their draft tracker.
11:35 am EST: Jon Gruden kicking ass on the Net. He’s been a nice addition to the team.
11:31 am EST: Eagles four picks away, again. Wouldn’t be shocked if they traded again.
11:28 am EST: With five 5th round picks, it’s clear the Birds will package some to get back into the fourth.
11:24 am EST: G-Men just picked receiver Ramses Barden. He can’t run or get off the line. They are praying he’s another Plax (minus the record). I don’t think so.
11:22 am EST: Eagles trade 85th pick with G-Men for the 91st and another 5th rounder!!! Now they have FIVE.
11:14 am EST: The Jeremy Maclin limo just arrived at NovaCare. Nice. Spadaro and Reese joking Mac isn’t moving fast enough.
11:12 am EST: Three picks away. Why do I feel defensive back?
11:07 am EST: ‘Skins just grabbed one of my faves. Cornerback Kevin Barnes. A lot of players I like are going to NFC East rivals. Damn!
11:05 am EST: Who is the nerdy Steelers fan announcing their pick?
11:03 am EST: Since the Birds’ picks on day 1 made sense, crazy Reid might return today.
10:52 am EST: ‘Boys up again. Robert Brewster, a tackle from Ball State. Brewster about to make millions.
10:49 am EST: 10 picks away from Eagles selection. Tight end or defense?
10:38 am EST: Some people still saying Maclin and DeSean are the same player!! If you say this, you don’t know football. Even if he is, that’s suddenly a bad thing? It’s like saying I don’t want two Steve Smith’s on my team. Ridiculous.
10:29 am EST: Dallas takes a linebacker. Jason Williams from Western Illinois. Loading up that 3-4 defense.
10:26 am EST: ‘Boys are on the clock. Will they trade out again? I say they go either WR or S.
10:23 am EST: The Net keeps showing Cowboys draft room. They look scared. 12 picks today!! How will they use all those?
10:16 am EST: NFL Net misses Adam Schefter. They have no one to break stories anymore. Evidently, the Net has no interest in giving Schefter a raise.
10:10 am EST: Lions just picked up a 3rd, 4th and 7th. Smart move. They need players everywhere.
10:06 am EST: Day 2 is under way. Still plenty of quality tight ends available. Cook, Ingram, Nelson, Coffman and Casey, among others. It will be interesting to see who they land. Jets just traded to the top of third round.

[...] left the door open. The Jets are going to be a major storyline heading into the season once again. Inside the Iggles has a great live draft diary rolling, by the way. Definitely check that [...]
April 26th, 2009 at 2:46 pmI think if Cornelius Ingram or Shawn Nelson are still there, or the tight end from Rice, they should take one of those three. Brent Celek is good, but not a full time starter.
April 26th, 2009 at 2:52 pmScott, any safeties you like at this point?
April 26th, 2009 at 3:11 pmIt’s going to be a DB, Moore is a great value here but I see them going Allen. Then we will probably package some 5ths to move into 4th for one of the remaining TE’s. A few will drop. Or we trade back now for 2 picks in 4th.
April 26th, 2009 at 3:13 pmSo what are the thoughts at this point?
DB (Moore as Harley pointed out?)
April 26th, 2009 at 3:32 pmTE (All the 2nd tier guys are still out there)
C (Gotta think one of the 5th rounders will get one)
DL depth?
Why can’t they just stop trading constantly, get Ingram, and be done with it? He’s still on the board, but I would guess he’ll be gone soon!
April 26th, 2009 at 3:48 pmThe Hobbs deal changes a lot. Ingram is still out there, as are Casey and a guy named John Nalbone, who the Birds worked out.
John – I don’t think they are looking at safety. Demps, Mikell, Jones and Baker are enough. Plus, if he’s still here, Sheldon can play FS in a pinch.
One thing: Ingram’s knee scares some teams. Not sure if he’ll last until the 5th, but of he does, Iggs will have to consider him.
April 26th, 2009 at 5:56 pmLike the analysis Scott, it’s looking more and more like Ingram is gonna be there.
What about a center to push Jackson in the 5th? AQ Shipley should be available.
April 26th, 2009 at 6:35 pmGood call, John on Shipley. However, I think Reid believes Nick Cole can push Jackson at center. I still think they will grab an O-lineman soon.
April 26th, 2009 at 6:39 pmShocker! The Eagles took a 24 year old Mormon O line player. Reid is a joke. We needed Shipley.
April 26th, 2009 at 7:18 pm“Me”, thanks for the bit of religous prejudice, that’s always appreciated.
April 26th, 2009 at 7:39 pmMe – I don’t care if the guy is a Buddhist, as long as he can play. If you think Reid is a joke after this draft, you know nothing about football. Go over to the Cowboys board. You’ll fit in nicely ;o)
April 26th, 2009 at 7:46 pmAwesome Scott, ha.
April 26th, 2009 at 7:56 pmScott, any sleepers you like late? Rashad Jennings from Liberty looks interesting, a back with nice size. Shipley’s still out there too, haha.
April 26th, 2009 at 9:15 pmShipley seems a little small for (5′11″,295)for the Birds line. I doubt they would take Jennings, even in the 7th. I like Julius Williams, OLB, from UConn. I don’t think they are looking at LB, though.
April 26th, 2009 at 9:36 pmAnd the Eagles give their fans a big Fokou. (Credit to my brother on that one.)
Okay, I know little about Moise other than his middle-of-the-pack combine numbers, but he sure as hell has a great name. I can practically see the jerseys flying off the racks.
And, now, you can always say, “No, that’s not what they’re saying; they’re saying ‘Fokou!’” We’ve given ourselves an out for our especially crass fans.
April 26th, 2009 at 10:43 pmSorry, Matt. I didn’t mean to steal your (or your brother’s) line. I wrote it before reading your comment. I hope Moise makes the team for comic reasons only.
April 26th, 2009 at 10:56 pmIt’s all good, Scott. I’ll just chalk it up as a case of great minds thinking alike… if you can call it that when it’s three people joking about implied vulgarity.
Overall, a great draft. Very happy about this one. Showed some great savvy in making a few great transactions and getting high value in late rounds. We got a good cornerback out of a surplus of 5th rounders.
As much as I’d like to see Sheldon get the Lito treatment, getting Hobbs was a great way to ensure that we have the depth to move him (or to leave him on the bench). He also provides a dangerous special teams option. We have a nice group of players to choose from when fielding our special teams.
April 27th, 2009 at 12:57 amGood report Scott,
I can’t believe how many of the players we drafted are kick/punt returners or at least have experience there. Reid does love competition, we’ll see who wins the spot.
April 27th, 2009 at 1:05 amMatt – “Implied vulgarity.” Very nice! You’re right, how can anyone not like what they did today and this entire off-season? I’ll break the whole thing down shortly, but man, I am not easily impressed by the Birds, but they have really shown me something the last few months.
Col224 – Thanks. It was a long weekend. I’m with you on the all the return guys. What the hell are they gonna do there? I see Hobbs and Maclin both on kickoffs and Maclin and DeSean splitting punt return duties. Demps will be moved off kickoffs to concentrate on FS. Just a hunch.
