The Philadelphia Eagles need a new safety to play alongside Malcolm JenkinsDa’Norris Searcy could be that someone. Even if Nate Allen returns, he will be paid a low salary and should be considered the backup whilst the Eagles look to upgrade.

I’ll break down Searcy over the next few slides but here’s a quick overview.

More from Eagles News

He was drafted by the Bills in 2011 in the fourth round. He’s 26 years old and has started for the past two seasons, accumulating 126 tackles, four sacks, four interceptions and two defensive touchdowns. His contract has expired with the Bills and reports suggest they can’t afford to bring him back as they already have money tied up to the safety position.

The free agent market for a safety isn’t very strong and neither is this years draft class (it never is). However, a tweet by Bills beat writer Matthew Fairburn got me thinking about Searcy. As the picture below shows, I asked him what he thought of him as a player and his reply was straight to the point – ‘He’s a very good player’.

The Buffalo Rumblings wrote about whether they can keep him here. They described Searcy as a ‘quality player in Buffalo over the past two seasons’ and a ‘valuable contributor in all phases’.

However, what do the Eagles want their safeties to do? Finding a safety to do everything the Eagles want is nearly impossible. The Eagles safeties have to be able to tackle in the open field, cover in both zone and man, ideally cover a lot receiver in man too in their nickel package, play both free safety and strong safety. That includes being able to play in the box and play as a single deep high safety.

Can Searcy (or anyone) really do all of that well?
