Philadelphia Eagles Not Making Post Season Is For The Better

Disappointing, disgusted, and infuriating are all words that we could use to describe the Philadelphia Eagles 2014 season. Just three weeks ago Eagles fans were talking first round bye and possible Super Bowl, not the Birds won’t even make the playoffs. There is no question after the loss to the Washington Redskins, that this team simply collapsed.

There were the 1994 Eagles that started 7-2, but lost their last seven games to finish the season 7-9, the 9-2 1993 Miami Dolphins who finished 9-7, and then you can’t forget the 2009 Denver Broncos who started 6-0 only to finish 8-8.

While the Eagles can still match last season’s total of 10 wins, there is no question that this should go down as one the biggest collapses in Eagles history. This team started 7-2 with the two losses being because of two calls at the goal line, now they have lost three straight in which they didn’t even look ready to play.

If the last three weeks have done anything, it has shown that the Eagles have major flaws and they aren’t built for a championship, at least not yet. The last three losses have brought us back to reality. To say the least, the Eagles winning covered up the flaws that we all knew existed.

They have major issues on the defensive side of the ball, specifically in the secondary, they are mediocre at the quarterback position, and Chip Kelly still has a lot to learn about being an NFL coach. 19-13 with two winning seasons is respectable, but I think it can be agreed on that there were game in which Kelly was outcoached.

Yeah, anytime you don’t make the playoffs in the National Football League it’s disappointing.  Not happy with the situation we’re in right now.  We just can’t sit here and feel sorry for yourselves.  That’s not what this group I’m around will do, and I know that.-Chip Kelly

While it is disappointing and unbelievable that the Eagles will in fact miss the playoffs and will be watching at home, it could in fact be a blessing in disguise. This team played six games against teams who are currently in the playoffs and were only 2-4 in those games.

If the Eagles did make the playoffs only to lose out in the first round, what difference does it make if the Eagles did or didnt make the postseason other than to make the fans feel better?

The Eagles are going to get a better draft pick and will be able to build this team up.  If season ended now, the Eagles would pick 20th in the draft. That would have gotten them wide receiver Brandin Cooks or safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix last season and guard Kyle Long or cornerback Desmond Trufant in 2013

Not to mention they will have money to spend in free agency. The Eagles aren’t cheap. When they think they’re a Super Bowl contender, they spend money. They got Terrell Owens and Jevon Kearse before 2004, and you can’t forget about the dream team before 2011.

Players know that this team is close to being a Super Bowl contender and that Chip Kelly is all about the “right” culture. Players want to come to Philadelphia.

While it is disappointing that the Eagles missed the postseason, it may have been for the better. Now Howie Roseman and Chip Kelly know where this team is and know that they do need to make some changes if they want to take the next step.

Making the playoffs would have been nice, but when winning the Super Bowl is the ultimate goal, missing the postseason this year may have been a blessing in disguise. This team will now have a chip on their shoulder headed into 2015 and will be looking to fly higher than ever when next season rolls around.
