The Philadelphia Eagles are in need of a big offseason. This doesn’t mean to make a big splash, but rather fill the holes along the roster without breaking the bank. With a new distribution of power in the teams front office, which gives head coach Chip Kelly full power with football decisions, it’ll be interesting to see which direction this team goes. This team has holes and depth issues along the secondary, offensive line, and at inside linebacker. These problem areas need immediate fixing. If not, the Eagles will be consistently good, but not great.

It seems like a long time ago when the Philadelphia Eagles “won” the offseason in 2011 and crowned themselves as the dream team. The Eagles made their splash and got burned. This offseason the team needs to stay away from big contracts like they have done in recent years. But what the team cant afford to do is ignore their problem areas.

Since last offseason, the team has had concerns about the aging offensive line that is also the second oldest in the NFL. Many thought the team would address it in free agency and the draft. It wasn’t, and the results weren’t very good. The projected starters, never played one snap at the same time together this past season because of injuries and suspension. This comes after each starter didn’t miss a single game in 2013. The line cannot be expected to hold up an entire season again. Chip Kelly and the new general manager, whoever it is, needs to prepare for the future. The o-line played a direct role in the underwhelming Eagles season this past year.

The more obvious and pressing need the Philadelphia Eagles have is basically that the entire secondary needs an extreme makeover. Corners Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher made up the worst corner duo in the league. Many games were lost due to a lack of a competent secondary. The fan base is fed up with the lackadaisical play from the secondary. For years now, the secondary has been the Achilles heel of the team.

From Nnamdi Asomugha to Fletcher, it’s time for the Eagles to completely change the landscape of their secondary. This is why this offseason is huge. No longer can the Eagles just sign anyone, they need to be aggressive while still keeping into account their budget. Also the draft needs to be dedicated to improving the secondary. This Eagles team is on the cusp of being a great team, not just a good one. It starts by upgrading your biggest flaw, the secondary. This offseason is a crucial one for Chip Kelly and company.

One issue that seems to be overlooked by fans and media is the uncertainty of the inside linebacker position. One of the spots is going to be locked up by Mychal Kendricks for the forseeable future, the other spot is in question. It is currently being held by team leader Demeco Ryans, but after an Achilles tear mid-season the already in decline linebacker has to be questioning his future. Just like the offensive line, the inside linebacker position cannot be ignored as the team needs to look to the future. Wether through the draft or free agency, the Philadelphia eagles need to move on from Ryans.

This Philadelphia Eagles team is good, but not great. This should be the year where the team and fans expect more than a good season. This offseason is crucial to the growth of this football team. It’s year three under Chip Kelly, if there’s no results, Chip could be on the hot seat. The team cannot afford to ignore the issues along the roster, in fact the team must be aggressive in getting the players the team needs. This upcoming free agency period and draft must yield results. This fan base deserves to see the Eagles finally obtain what everybody wants, a Super Bowl. This offseason proves to be a monumental chance to getting closer to that goal. It’s Chip Kelly’s show now, and he needs to improve this roster this offseason.
