The Philadelphia Eagles Should Be the NFL’s Role Model
By Jesse Shuter
It seems like every day a new story is coming out where an NFL player or employee is committing some kind of crime or heinous act. Players continue to feel like since they are professional athletes they are untouchable and that is starting to appear to be the truth.
While all of this is going on, teams like the Dallas Cowboys are reinforcing this behavior by viewing these acts as some sort of discount or sale on these players and going after whoever they can get. Very few teams seem to care about character anymore, but I am proud to say that Philadelphia Eagles and head coach Chip Kelly have not.
The entire offseason Chip Kelly has preached that he is only willing to sign players that believe in his locker room culture. He doesn’t care how much talent a player has, if they are not on board with what he believes then they are on their way out. It might be sad to see star players like wide receiver DeSean Jackson and running back LeSean McCoy leave each year, but when every other team is dealing with suspensions and the Eagles have their players winning the Walter Payton Award it will help to ease that pain.
Eagles
The way that players have been acting doesn’t just affect the NFL but kids too. In a day and age where kids are so easily impressionable, should they really be supporting these teams that have no concern for character. I for one would be disheartened if ever saw someone wearing a Greg Hardy Dallas Cowboys jersey. Parents everywhere, the players association, and the league itself should be proud of teams like the Eagles sticking to their morals.
There are still some teams out there like the Eagles trying to make the NFL a better place. The Detroit Lions had let themselves forget about their morals for a while, grabbing quite a few gentlemen with off field issues. However, under their new regime they seem to have cleaned house of these poor characters and have brought in some very good people to replace them. Just look at their draft.
Their first two picks both were great people. Their first round pick, offensive guard Laken Tomlinson, said that it was his goal to one day go back to Jamaica and help fix their economy. Their second round pick, running back Ameer Abdullah (who the Eagles reportedly liked before they went with running back DeMarco Murray), was a class act at Nebraska and was notorious for his charity work off the field.
This idea of grabbing good people needs to catch on faster than the idea that it is okay to sign people who beat women or their children or their parents. Otherwise the NFL could be looking at even more problems down the road.
