Will The Philadelphia Eagles Cut Matt Barkley?

When the Philadelphia Eagles selected quarterback Matt Barkley in the fourth round of the 2013 draft, many thought the team had just selected a future starter at the most important position in sports. Many draft experts considered Barkley a first round prospect at one point, but fell in the draft after an average senior season at USC. That same disappointment has followed Barkley into the NFL. For whatever reason, Barkley has not turned the corner and has failed to prove he can be anything more than a below average backup QB. Now the question arises, will the Philadelphia Eagles cut Matt Barkley?

Matt Barkley has been on the trading block for the past year and has fetched basically zero interest. The teams faith in Barkley is dwindling by the second, and things could come to an end between the team and Barkley this summer. Even with reports that the selection of Matt Barkley was head coach Chip Kelly’s decision, time is running out for Barkley. If the Philadelphia Eagles have anymore hope for Barkley and his potential, he has to show something this summer.

It seems like every opportunity Matt Barkley has gotten, he hasn’t taken advantage. Whether its practices during the summer, preseason games, or even regular season action, Barkley has been invisible. The inconsistency throughout Barkley’s career could end up being the main reason why the team might part ways with him this coming season.

The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback situation is pretty straight forward with Sam Bradford as the starter and Mark Sanchez as the backup. The last remaining spot for the third string QB position is uncertain. Tim Tebow and Matt Barkley will both be in competition to make the team, and is a battle that should warrant some attention. Just the simple fact that Barkley will be “competing” with Tebow is a sign that the team isn’t that high on the third year QB. If you have to compete with a QB that hasn’t played in two years and has serious mechanic issues than maybe you shouldn’t even be on the team in the first place.

Matt Barkley’s expectations seem to fade every year. When Barkley came in as a rookie, he was expected to compete for the starting job against Michael Vick and Nick Foles. Barkley faded quickly in that race, but still got a chance when both Vick and Foles got injured during the season and put up some pretty horrid numbers going 28-46 for 287 yards, 0 touchdowns, 3 interceptions in about a game and a half of action. A year later, Barkley was expected to compete for the backup job against Mark Sanchez, that didn’t happen and some even thought that the undrafted QB GJ Kinne outplayed Barkley.

Now we’re here in year 3 and Barkley has been relegated, he is in another battle just to stay on the team as a third string quarterback. Tim Tebow isn’t a great QB, but he has moxy, experience, and passion on his side. We all know Chip Kelly loves players that posses those traits. I’m not saying Barkley doesn’t have those abilities, but he has failed to really show them. You know what Tim Tebow will bring to the Philadelphia Eagles, with Barkley you’re not really sure.

The clock is ticking for Matt Barkley to make any kind of impact on this Philadelphia Eagles team. Expectations and faith are falling for Barkley and it’s getting to the point where fans might not even be shocked if the Eagles just flat out cut him. This summer is crucial for Matt as he fights to stay on the roster, he needs to show why he was once considered a first round talent. The team has given Barkley a number of opportunities to show what he can do, but the results haven’t been very good. This could be Matt Barkley’s last chance because the team now has different options they could go with. Will the Philadelphia Eagles cut Matt Barkley? Im not sure, but there is a real possibility that could happen.
